Placement Day 30 (December 17)

  1. Today was an okay day. I am trying to "phase out" since this is the last week I will be in Mrs. Mathis's class. It is very sad that this is my last day. It is crazy that this is my last week. The days have went by so fast. Well when I got to class today, Mrs. Mathis had a warm up on the board. The students spent about twenty minutes finishing their warm up and then Mrs. Mathis went over their warm up. They then were able to work on their classwork for a grade. If they didn't finish their classwork they were to take it home and complete it for homework. A few students needed help, and I helped them as they needed it. While they were working I talked to Mrs. Mathis about my lesson that she graded. I told her how other teachers just gave their teacher cadets 100's to be nice, but she didn't give me a 100. I was thankful for this though because she told me what I needed to improve on. I thought this was very smart of her. She told me that she doesn't think there is a single teacher cadet who is already a "perfect teacher." She said it is highly unlikely, and I agree with her. I am glad she didn't give me a hundred because now I can use what she said and work on those things. She gave me some really good points, and I will work on those things that she told me. After we talked about my lesson, it was time for my class to leave. I cleaned up the room, and then it was time for me to go. I am so sad that my days are dwindling down. I am excited for my last day though, I am so excited to celebrate my time there with them.

  2. As I approach the middle of my last week, I am starting to realize how much these kids have meant to me. One made me a Christmas card and had it on my table for me when I got there. It was the sweetest thing. I love the kids and I will miss them dearly. I do not want to leave them just yet, but I am thankful for the mornings I did get to spend with them and for the help they provided me with. These second graders helped me just as much, if not more, than I have helped them in the past few weeks. I will miss counting the books they read and grading their tests. I also will miss reading with the students I normally read with. Being a role model for younger children makes me feel good because I remember how I used to look up to other teenagers when I was their age. I am so glad that I got to experience this placement because it has given me patience and shown me a way to help others that I did not know I was capable of doing.

  3. Today was pretty great. I found out that tomorrow the Kindergarten class is having a pajama party. The girl that told me said “I can’t decide if I’m going to wear my princess pajamas or my SpongeBob pajamas.” I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of seeing all these little kids in their PJs. I swear little kids are my favorite, it’s going to be absolutely horrible leaving my class Friday. I wish I could stay forever. Anyways shortly after finding out about their party tomorrow, I saw what they were working on. Mrs. Gandy had the class cutting out a little red sheet of paper. I didn’t realize what it was supposed to be until she handed out the second sheet of the paper which was the other four peddles of the flower. They pasted the papers together and glued seven black eyed peas to it and made it look like the flower commonly associated with Christmas, the poinsettia. It was pretty cool looking. Mrs. Gandy didn’t get to the calendar because the kids had to go to the library. Before I left I asked Mrs. Sutusky if I could wear my PJs with the class and she said I could! I’m so ready for tomorrow. Talk about having the Christmas spirit!

  4. Today was a fun day in the second grade classroom. When I arrived, I organized and cut some more papers for Mrs. Catoe. After that, I got to make some green icing for an activity that the class was doing later on today. I had to pour icing into a bowl and add food coloring to it. It was very messy and the mixture was very tough to mix together. When I finished, it was time for Morning Meeting. After the typical routine, the kids went back to their desks. However, they did not have a daily mathematics and language activity. Instead, they got a punctuation activity. Mrs. Catoe read a cute little story of how Santa Claus messed up with punctuation. They got a packet that went along with the story that they had to finish. They needed a lot of help with it, so Mrs. Catoe and me walked around and helped the students. They did a very good job once they got the hang of it! Overall, the day went well and went by fairly quickly. I am not ready to leave my students. I am going to miss them so much!

  5. When I arrived at my placement today I continued the hand wreaths. Today I added a picture of each of the children with Santa Claus. The wreaths look beautiful! I know the parents of these children will be so proud. When I finished the wreaths, I then took the class to the bathroom. When I returned, Mrs. McFarland was not ready for them to go to the rug for reading time. This made me sad because it might have been the last time for me to read them. While the class continued to work on their bell work, I put labels on books. While I was doing that, the class then started coloring Christmas pictures. When I was finished it was almost time for me to go. Since it’s my last week with these children, it breaks my heart to leave them to go back to the high school.

  6. My placement today was very laid back. The students are anxious, and getting ready for Christmas. Of course, they’re more hyper than usual. Today they continued working on their project. Yesterday, they finished all of the math for their project. Therefore, they were all illustrating their snowmen today. The students found that the project wasn’t as easy, as it was made out to be. They really had to limit their spending for the characteristic of the snowmen, in order to stay within the given budget along with weight. The students were given a compass to draw the body of the snowmen. This way the circles would be perfect, and it would also help their masterpiece look a lot more creative. Most students were able to finish their snowman today during class, however some had to take it home to work on it. Mrs. Smith made the project due tomorrow. The students seemed to enjoy doing it. I believe they’re just happy they get to do something fun before their break. Today I helped some students figure out how to use the compass, and others edit their math. So far the snowmen look fairly good. The 6th grade is also wrapping up their fundraiser for students in need of Christmas presents. They have raised a tremendous amount of money for it. Mrs. Smith has also finished some of the shopping for those individuals. The students aren’t aware of it, but I plan to surprise them with cookies tomorrow. I only have two more days left in my placement, and I’m not looking forward to my last day with them. I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement this semester, and would surely do it again given the chance.

  7. Today in my Teacher Cadet placement, it was a very special day for many reasons. Such as it was my 18th birthday, and I taught my instructor graded lesson. So naturally I was in a very good mood, and starting my day off with a great bunch of kids only improved it. The seventh graders learned about careers from the guidance counselor, instead of having a regular health day. The kids did actually very well behavior wise, they were all very attentive! Coach Frye liked it because it gave him a break since both the seventh graders and the first six graders had that career lesson.
But the second sixth grade class did not participate in the “career” lesson because I taught my final Teacher Cadet Instructor graded lesson. I started off with giving the kids a football word search, they did really good on it and their behavior during it was excellent. After the word search, we played flag football and it was a blast! One of our college partners also observed me, and he said I did a good job also. Which was very flattering and humbling, because I didn’t think I did all that well. After the flag football game, the kids shook hands and dressed out. It was a great day and now there is only two days left.

  8. The students had to copy down South Carolina vocabulary today instead of South Carolina facts. I explained each vocabulary word to them as they wrote it down. I had to wing it because Mr. Leininger did not send me the words ahead of time. Luckily I remembered the words and knew enough background information to explain them all. After I covered the South Carolina vocabulary with the students, Mr. Leininger gave them their tests back. The students then asked questions about their test and Mr. Leininger and I answered them. Mr. Leininger then had the students play review games to review the material they were just tested on because the students did not do well on their tests. The students did not do so well on their review game either. Mr. Leininger gave them on a lecture on studying and the importance of making good grades before they switched classes. I wish the students would do better. They all seem like they do not care about school which is only going to hurt them in life. It breaks my heart to see how badly the students did on their tests. I wish I could have done more to help them or make them understand. I felt extremely frustrated as I left my placement today. I hope tomorrow will be better.

  9. Today, the students continued working on their infographics. I really enjoyed seeing how different they each were. It was a perfect representation of the differences in the personalities of each student. Lauren created an infographics about the hats that were worn in the 1920s. It was beyond creative. Calvin also had an incredibly creative project. He used innovative ways to display information about how dogs survived Hurricane Katrina. This project made it obvious what each student was interested in. I love the idea of giving these eighth graders an assignment that appeals to their interests, but also helps them learn the basic knowledge. It made it fun for the students and successful for Mrs. Kahler. I’m super excited to see what they do with this project throughout the week. It’s amazing how much better these infographics are than the ones that they turned in at the beginning of my placement. I can really see an improvement!

  10. Well today was just like an regular day. When I arrived I talked to Mrs. Joyner until the kids showed up. When they came in they got un packed and got settled in. After that we got them to pick their lunch choice and their breakfast for the next day. After that they did their morning work we reviewed it with them as usual. Then they did their morning meeting where they read some Christmas stories. After the morning meeting they got to do a Christmas worksheet which involved them coloring. After that the students had their silent reading time for fifteen minutes. While they did this I walked around and helped them or just listened to them if they wanted to read to me. After that Mrs. Joyner asked me to use this reading app on the I pads to assist the kids in reading. This was the first day using the apps and the I pad so it was a little difficult trying to explain how to work it, to the kids. They eventually got a hang of it and they loved it! It amazed me how much technology we use now and how well it can work if everything goes right. After using the I pads it was time for me to go, so I said goodbye and left.

  11. When I got to class I had to go to Mrs. Holley’s office to get some worksheets that the class had to do the week coming back from break. When I got back we read our usual fifteen minutes for SSR then I took attendance. Mrs. Holley then told the class that they will be running tiger-trails today since it was a little warmer than usual, and to dress out. While the students were dressing out I took the attendance to the office because the internet wasn’t working. When I got back the students were already stretching and soon began their five minute warm up lap. The class then went outside to run their two tiger-trails. When we returned back into the gym the class did a couple of drills such as box jumps and jump rope. For the remaining time in class, Mrs. Holley allowed them to play basketball or volleyball. Today was a pretty easy day I thought. None of the students complained too much about what they had to do, and I played basketball with the students at the end of class.

  12. Today I took attendance and they students watched Channel One News. Mrs. Peake then jumped right in to the infomercials. I got to film them on her cell phone for her. It was a lot of fun getting to see the students get creative with their infomercials. You could tell they worked hard on them and they put huge effort in them. One group had to make an infomercial about an "I-Pencil". They got so creative that rigged fishing line through the ceiling and attached one end to the pencil and on the other end was the fishing reel. It was awesome because Cody completely thought of the idea himself and they followed through with the plan, and it worked! I love seeing students take fun project seriously and getting creative. Its nice to know the thought and the work you put into the assignment isn't a waste. I thought that this was such a fun project and so creative on Mrs. Peake's part. I learn so much in her class all the time!
