Placement Day 22 (December 5)

  1. Today Mrs. Mathis taught the students how to use Scientific Notation. Before they started taking notes, they did a warm up that Mrs. Mathis took up for a classwork grade. This warm up was a review on the past two lessons. I began to grade these classwork papers, and the students did fairly well on them. One girl got every single one of the questions wrong. This made me very sad. What do you do with a student who is just not understanding the lesson? While I was grading these papers, Mrs. Mathis was teaching the students scientific notation. This was a very simple lesson as well, I wish I would have taught this lesson. The students were kind of bad today and very rowdy. It was a very loud day. After they left, I asked Mrs. Mathis when she wanted me to teach my next lesson. She told me any day would be okay. She told me that I could teach square roots. She has been trying to help me come up with games to help them understand. I am excited to teach this lesson, but kind of scared.

  2. Today my placement was very nice. I arrived to class and got to work with the students right off the bat. The children were working on Christmas ornaments for their tree at home (they also have a tree for the classroom). They were to get ten stickers to decorate their trees. After that, they came back to my table. I punched holes and tied ribbon on the ornaments to hang them up. After everyone’s tree was completed, they went back for Morning Meeting. Following the Morning Meeting, they got to start on their daily language and mathematics practice. I had to fill one out for a missing student, Shyenne, since it was a study sheet for their test. Overall, it was a very productive day and the students were behaving so nicely. It is also such a relief to know that I do not have to teach any more lessons! I am so glad I have already gotten those out of the way.

  3. Today during my placement I did my lesson for my cooperating teacher, Ms. Pigg, to grade me on. To start the lesson out, I began going over their morning work. Their morning work contains of English and Math. These are my two favorite subjects, or the subjects I find easiest to learn and teach. After morning work, I felt comfortable. We went over the upcoming important dates and the weather which was followed by the month, day and date. Then, I called Lacey to go to the reading area. She was the student reader for today. After her, I read “If You Take a Mouse to the Movies” to them. When the book was read, I asked the students to get their math workbooks and return to their desk. I introduced that we would be learning how to identify and write numbers. After ten minutes of doing this, I had to leave. I felt very comfortable and confident about my lesson.

  4. Today was an amazing day at my placement! I began class by going over the South Carolina facts with the students. After discussing those, I went straight into my lesson from yesterday. I was so proud of myself for not needing Mr. Leininger to introduce the lesson today. I began by reviewing yesterday’s lesson with the students. They were engaged in the lesson, asking questions, and getting into the lesson with me. I discussed the Kansas election of 1855 and had the students simulate the election. I gave them labels and made them vote. I counted all of their votes together and then I only counted the ones with special labels. The results were different from reach other. The point of the activity was to show the students what ineligible voters can do because ineligible voters voted in the Kansas election of 1855. I then finished the notes. I discussed the lesson with the students and asked them questions. One student asked a question that caused Mr. Leininger to jump in with a different PowerPoint to help answer her question. For the rest of the period, he and I taught together. It was so much fun! Then when second period came in, Mr. Leininger allowed me to skip going over the South Carolina facts with the students so I could teach them. I did not get through my whole lesson before I had to leave, but I did repeat the activity with them. Both sets of students seemed to really enjoy the lesson and activity. Mr. Leininger seemed to be sincerely impressed with my lesson and activity also. I was finally able to breathe because I knew I did well and his grading will reflect that. I could not have asked for today to go any better.

  5. Today was hilarious. I started out by kind of the normal stuff, walking around and making sure everyone is on task. After the kids put up their activities, Mrs. Gandy asked me to do the calendar. I did everything that she always does, but out of nowhere a boy told me I had something backwards. I wasn’t positive I wrote it right so I just asked what he said was backwards. He kept saying whatever I pointed to wasn’t what he was talking about, then he just said, “no, you just have write bad.” I was thinking excuse you, you little brat, but I contained it and moved on. I’m proud of that. After I finished Mrs. Gandy moved them all to the circle and read them “the Gingerbread Girl.” The Gingerbread Girl was much smarter than her late male counterpart (surprise, surprise). It was a cute story. She finished the book and started group time. Two girls simply begged me to stay with them, so I did. One of the girls was just talking away (she’s not a very good student), but the other was cracking me up. She just kept looking at the bad student girl like, “are you kidding me? Did you really just say that?” then she would look at me and I couldn’t help but laugh. The bad students also happens to love me. She even told me so four or five times before I left. She’s sweet but I guess she gets a lot of attention at home. I had a lot of fun today and haven’t enjoyed my placement this much ever.

  6. I had the best time in my placement this morning! It was probably my favorite day of the course. I taught vocabulary review games to the class and it was a blast! I designed games like Vocabulary Twister, Vocabulary Hedbandz, Guess the Word, and Vocabulary Matching, around the words that the students will be tested on tomorrow. It took me hours to put these games together, but it was so worth it when I saw how much fun the students had! At the beginning of the class, I explained each game and how their words tie into the game. Mrs. Kahler and I placed the students in 4 groups, based on who works well with each other, and they rotated between stations throughout the duration of the class. At the end of the class, we discussed which game worked best and which game was the most enjoyable. They all loved Vocabulary Twister, and thought that it helped them the most! They also really enjoyed Hedbandz! If I could go back and do it again, I would adjust Vocabulary Matching because they had a lot of difficulty finding the matches and no one got finished in time. I had so much fun! I can’t wait to design a lesson for them again.

  7. Today was a really slow day. When I arrived at my placement the class was working on their bell work. Some was rewriting their words and then some was coloring pictures. I sat at the table for a while and observed the class. Finally Mrs. McFarland put me to work. I worked one on one with Abbey. I had to guide her to cut her hands that they traced on green paper. Once they cut their hands out they are going to take all 8 hands and make a Christmas wreath. Abbey is one of the sweetest kids in the class. She can get an attitude sometimes with you, but it’s just too cute. You’ll just forget about it. She got distracted once in a while by the paper she had cut off the hands. When I finally got her attention back she started cutting way to fast. She cut part of her finger. The paper finger that is. She started to get upset and started saying, “It’s ruined, I’m so sorry!” I felt so bad for her. I told her it was fine and I can take tape and tape it back together. Mrs. McFarland then took the class to the bathroom. When they returned I finished cutting the hands out, while Mrs. McFarland read to the class.

  8. Well days like today makes me love teacher cadet because it made me so happy! Today was a little different because it was just me and Coach Frye teaching. This was because Coach Greenway had to go somewhere for the day, which meant while she was away the boys got to choose what to play. My seventh graders did their regular station day routine, which consists of ether basketball, volleyball, jump roping, or walking. So I suggested to Coach Frye that we play flag football inside with the second sixth grade class.
Coach said that flag football would be fine, so it was me against him and after we picked our teams it was time to compete! My team was Me, Thomas, Erin, Mike, Katlynn, Cara, and Sierra. We did great and Sierra even got a touchdown, which helped us to tie with Coach Frye’s team at the end. The kids had a lot of fun especially Erin who had two touchdowns, and one came on the last play of the game to tie the game! I hope we get to play it again very soon!

  9. Today we started off like normal, with Channel One News and attendance. Then the students got to present all of their skits. Mrs. Peake asked me to record them. They were awesome!! They were all so funny and the students worked hard to plan them out and you could tell. I love their enthusiasm and how they really got into the assignment. They have really changed my outlook on whether or not I want to teach middle school. After all of the skits were done, Mrs. Peake brought the class back together and gave them a writing assignment. They had to write a story they though would make it on to a television show of their choice, using their vocabulary words. I loved this idea and so did the kids! A lot of them finished or got close to finishing before the class was over.

  10. Todays’ class began with the morning news show. Following the show the students were asked to get out their homework, while I went around and checked it. I also signed the students agendas, which they wrote tonight’s homework on. Mrs. Smith then explained to her students why she wasn’t there yesterday. She told them how she was bit by her dog, and ended up slicing her hand open, forcing her to go to the ER half of the night. Afterwards, Mrs. Smith started to teach a lesson. She asked me to go do something for her while she was teaching the lesson, cut Christmas trees. The sixth grade is raising money to buy students Christmas, for the ones that can’t afford it. Each class has a goal, and when the students give money for the cause, they write their name on a tree and hang it outside their homeroom door. Thankfully, the students are buying a lot, which means I had a lot of trees to cut out. When I came back to class I checked her second class’s homework, and watched her teach a lesson to them.

  11. Today was one of the class’s reproductive health days. So after attendance was taken and the fifteen minutes of SSR were over, most of the class went off with Coach Lowder and Mrs. Holley, about seven of the students stayed back in the gym with me and Chief Smith. While I waited for the students to finish getting dressed out, I set up the equipment that the students would be using for the rest of class. The students had to complete two sets of circuit training, which consisted of agility ladders, hurdles, box jumps, jump ropes, medicine ball work, and jogging. When the students came back from dressing out we first stretched then completed fifteen push-ups, sit-ups, and mountain climbers. Originally the students were supposed to spend one minute at each station and do each station twice, but I gave the students the option of doing the stations once, but for two minutes, and they agreed to do so. After completing the circuit, the students then did a ten minute run/walk and were allowed to play basketball for the remaining time in class.

  12. Dec 5/ 2013 Today I got there before all the kids got there so we waited until everyone had come in and got their backpack on the hook. A couple of the kids were coming in late and were having a little trouble settling down but eventually everyone got settled in. We stood for the pledge of allegiance and took a moment of silence and then we sat back down. Mrs. Mason chose a couple of kids for me to read with and I started reading with them. They didn’t have very long books so the kids got through them pretty fast. Every time one kid finished a book I started reading with the next student chosen. After I had finished reading with all the students I took the kids to the computer lab where they began taking their AR tests like usual. After I had got everyone’s logged signed the students and I returned back to class where the kids were given the chance to make inside trades to get different books. So after all the kids had put their books up and got another one they were brought down to the floor to take up where they left off yesterday with the English books. They had a couple more words they had to learn before they were completely finished. The kids didn’t have much trouble understanding the words and sped through the lesson pretty quickly. After she had finished she asked the kids to put up their English books and take out their notebooks. The kids returned to their seat and done what they were asked. I had to leave shortly after to return to school.

  13. Today was my day to teach! When I arrived this morning I was so excited and nervous! When I arrived I felt like such a teacher carrying in my lesson plan and my materials. When I arrived I sat up my stuff and got everything ready. When the kids came in we did the lunch choices like usual and the breakfast count. After that they were all ready for me to teach. I started with my power point and taught them how to identify and name certain solid shapes. I asked some questions while I was up there and they were very responsive. After the first minute of being up there I got very comfortable and tried to joke with them. When I finished the power point I had them match shapes onto a shape booklet I had made them. They loved the hands-on activity and I loved walking around and helping them. When everyone was finished with their book I passed out actual solid shapes they could hold while I asked my review questions. I showed them which shapes would roll and which ones had flat surfaces and how many they had. We I finished with that my lesson was complete. When it was done Mrs. Joyner had a writing assignment for them about my lesson plan. They had to write about what shapes would roll and what they could find in their houses that would roll. It amazed me at how much they knew and learned. I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride as I left because they actually knew and understood what I taught them.
