Placement Day 21 (December 4)

  1. Today I taught my lesson. It was very nerve racking because I had Mrs. Mathis and Mrs. Sutusky watching me the entire time. I taught the kids the basic rules of exponents, and they were very well behaved. I was surprised at how involved the students were in my lesson. I was very scared that nobody would understand my lesson, or that the students would not be involved at all. To my surprise, they were very involved. If they got up and did a problem, I gave them a sucker for doing that. I know that it is hard to get up in front of people and do math problems, but they did very well at this. I began the class by giving them a warm up. After we went over the warm up, I began to teach them. I went over three different basic rules for exponents. After doing each one, and doing multiple examples of each, I let them do their homework. They had about twenty minutes to complete this, and a lot of students got their homework done. The only problems I had today was being loud, and one boy was sleeping, and it was hard to control the students at some point. I think I wasn't loud is because I was trying to be calm. I was nervous, and I think that's why my voice was so low. As for the class being calm, I just had to get their attention a couple times. This was okay, and it was an okay day. I loved being in control of the classroom. I thought that was cool. I am excited for my next lesson.

  2. Wednesdays in kindergarten are pretty average. They were working on a worksheet when I got there. Their little worksheets trip me out; they are just math stuff most the time. The class got it for the most part and did really well. Then Mrs. Gandy told the kids about trading out their “Ram Bucks” for fives. She asked me to go around and get their groups of five one dollar “Ram Bucks” and trade them out. The first group I went to got a lot of fives from me, but the second seemed uninterested in getting fives. I think they didn’t understand that only one five was the same as having five ones. They just don’t get how having less sheets would still be the same. I only got to the third group before it was time to go to the rug. The third group was more interested. On girl had 60 “Ram Bucks”. At the rug Mrs. Gandy read them “The Gingerbread Man,” they got into the story too. Right at the end, where the fox is about to trick the Gingerbread Man, and she shut the book and sent the class to their seats to write down what would happen to the Gingerbread Man. Most of the guessed right. She finished the story and sent them to group time by then I had to go.

  3. Today, my placement got interesting. I took most of the time I was there to watch and take notes from Ms. Pigg. I am teaching for her to grade me tomorrow and found myself quite nervous about it, so I decided it would be best to watch how she does and handles things. I realized today that tomorrow I have a lot to step up to. Tomorrow is going to be full of patience, and the “want to” to help students who may not understand. A lot of stress is on me because I am being handed a load of responsibility when I walk in the door. Although I know the students will respect me by behaving, I am fairly nervous because there are fifteen seven and eight year olds for me to make sure they are getting the material. However, I am getting to teach my favorite subject. Mathematics should be easy for me to explain to the students because I understand it so well myself.

  4. Today, the students were very well-behaved. It was a very typical day and nothing unordinary was going on. As usual, we did the Morning Meeting first. Quietly, we got through this very quickly. After Morning Meeting, the students received their daily language and mathematics. They got through that and they worked very diligently. The next thing the class did was watch a video. They have been reading “Ralph S. Mouse” and today they got to watch the movie for it. It was a very cute video. Nothing very significant happened today. I helped the students with their activities if they needed it. Mrs. Catoe had me organize some stuff for an activity that the class is doing Friday. I had to separate some paper for each student to make their own Christmas chain or “garland.” I cannot wait to help them Friday with this! I love being with my class during Christmas time!

  5. When I arrived at my placement the class was doing bell work. Some was writing their words and some was doing math work. Mrs. McFarland asked me to take the class to the bathroom. When I returned, we had another craft to do. This time it was Santa. The class colored paper plates, added eyes, mustaches, red hat, and pink cotton balls for his cheeks. While they were doing this, Mrs. McFarland put on “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, so they could have some fun music to listen to. When a couple of them was finished they then went to me at the back table where they made his beard. They put glue on the back of the plates and added 7 long stripes of white tissue paper. Once these were semi-dry I then was given the job and hanging them from the ceiling since I was the tall person in the room. While we were waiting on the rest of the class to finish, I helped Zyon with her Christmas tree since she was absent yesterday. the time I was ready to leave only half of the class was finished with their Santa’s.

  6. Today was such an amazing day! I began class by going over the South Carolina facts with the students. After discussing them, Mr. Leininger reviewed yesterday’s lesson and then handed it off to me. I began my lesson on the Kansas-Nebraska Act with a PowerPoint. I covered the material at a moderate pace and made sure to explain the information thoroughly. I would underline what I wanted the students to write down, yet still explain everything to them. I showed the students a video about John Brown who was an abolitionist. He took part in the Bleeding Kansas crisis. After the video I recapped the lesson. I had the students analyze why the event was an important factor that helps cause the Civil War. I then had them fill out an exit slip. They had to tell me one thing they learned during the lesson and why the lesson was important. Mr. Leininger finished up class by showing the students two videos. When second period came in, I covered the South Carolina facts with them. Then I began their lesson by reviewing the lesson they had yesterday. I had the opportunity to teach them one slide of notes before I had to leave. Mr. Leininger told me I did a good job, but I need to prepare more for the students to do. He said I had a good pace, and covered just the right amount of material for one day. I could not believe how well my lesson went. The students were interactive and attentive. I cannot wait to finish my lesson on Bleeding Kansas with them tomorrow. I have really cool activity planned and I cannot wait.

  7. Throughout most of the class period, today, Mrs. Kahler helped me work on my lesson plans for tomorrow. I had a graphic that I needed to make so that we could use the smart board, so that took up most of my time. While I worked on this assignment, the students were busy working on a comparison chart of the stories by Poe that they have analyzed. They did a great job of working on this independently! At the end of the class, Mrs. Kahler went over the answers with them. I’m super excited to teach tomorrow, but I know that I have a ton of work to do before I am prepared. Mrs. Kahler has been helping me come up with some really great ideas to help them learn their vocabulary words, and I think that they are all going to have so much fun! I hope that I help them prepare for their test on these words, tomorrow!

  8. Today Mrs. Peake began the class with Channel One News and I took attendance. She then gave the class an assignment. She gave them worksheets with sentences and they had to plug in the correct word to the sentence. After they worked on that for a little while, she let me go over the answers with them. It wasn’t really scary for me, because they are such a great class. After that she broke them up in to groups for another assignment. She gave each group three words and they had to create skits to go along with them. I walked around as each group was discussing, and gave some of them ideas. From what ideas I’ve heard so far, they are going to be very good and pretty funny. I’m so excited to watch them present tomorrow. Mrs. Peake also asked to go over the worksheet with her second block. I was a bit more nervous because I don’t really know this class and they a much larger. They were still good for me though. After that it was time for me to go.

  9. My placement went well today. It started off with the morning news show, and then continued with classwork. Unfortunately Mrs. Smith wasn’t their today, and the students had a substitute. Mrs. Brazel was there for the day. Mrs. Smith left the students a worksheet on the lesson she taught yesterday. The students then worked on that for the remainder of class. I also had the opportunity to answer any questions the students’ had. I was very impressed at the students’ behavior. They all acted very well for the substitute. I know she enjoyed them a lot, and looks forward to coming back again. For the most part the students are doing well with their work. However, the second class seems to be ahead of them. The biggest thing the students struggle with is their homework. They simple don’t do it, or they have some excuse as to why it’s not with them. A grade can only take so many zeros before it’s terrible. They also don’t realize what a zero does to their grades. If the students would do their homework, they would do a whole lot better in the class.

  10. Today when I got to class I took attendance as the students walked in and shortly after began reading for SSR. After we were done reading, Mrs. Holley told that class that they would be running their last mile today for a major test grade. They had to run it under nine minutes to receive the full grade of a hundred, and slowly lose points the longer they took after the nine minutes had passed. Some of the students started out too fast and quickly ran out of energy, but some students didn’t even put forth their full effort the first two laps which hurt their grade after they couldn’t make up their first two slow laps in the last two. The fastest time that one of the students got was a 6:17, which was considerably faster than the rest of the class. After everyone completed their four laps and times were recorded, we went back to the Gym and Mrs. Holley allowed the class to play for the rest of the block.

  11. Dec 4/ 2013 Today during Mrs. Mason’s class we did the usual routine. We read our books and then took everyone to the computer lab. They sat down and began taking their AR tests. I walked around and initialed everyone’s paper when they were done. After everyone had taken their tests and been graded we returned back to the room. David was having trouble today so she sent me to a classroom where David and I could read quietly. He had a Scooby-Doo book and it was more pages than the usual books so David and I took turns reading the book. It took us about 15 minutes to complete the book by taking turns reading. Mrs. Mason then gave me her iPad so that David could take the AR test on the Scooby Doo book. Once we got David logged in I read the questions and the answer choices and he picked the right one. He made a 100 on the test and we then returned back to the classroom where the kids were in front of the board with their English books. The kids were learning about certain words in the book. Mrs. Mason would read the highlighted word on the board and then read the definition. Then she would read a short story on the word.

  12. Today was an sort of hectic day! When I arrived I tried to get there earlier so I could talked Mrs. Joyner a lot about my lesson plan for tomorrow. We discussed what all I would do and what would take place. When the kids arrived we got straight to work. They picked out their lunch and we did the breakfast count for the next day. They then began their morning work. They also started the Elf on the Shelf book the other day, so they were also looking around the room for the elf. Their class elf’s name is scooter and they love him so much. After that we did the morning meeting and they read another Christmas book. After they finished with the morning meeting I helped sharpen their pencils while they prepared to do a worksheet. While they did their worksheet I walked around and helped whoever needed my help. These are such a great group of kids and for the most part they all really try to do their best! After walking around it was time for me to go.

  13. Since I have multiple class for my Teacher Cadet placement, I always have kids doing different things. Such as the seventh grade class I have in the morning was in the weight room, while both sixth grade classes played whiffle ball. My seventh graders were having their first workout today and I could tell a lot of them were very nervous because they were afraid of embarrassing themselves. Mrs. Greenway started off the class with stretching and running, then led the class into the new weight room. She started off by reviewing all the machines by asking their functions and names. Then afterwards they all got to lift, and I had to leave after they started actually lifting.
For my sixth graders they played whiffle ball like I said earlier in this passage. After my first class left, my favorite class came in and they dressed out and I let this girl name Taylor Thompson lead the stretch routine because she asked. Coach Frye had been talking trash about his team beating my team bad the last time we played, so he challenged me again. Me and Coach both picked our teams, and I came out having Thomas, Erin, Ana, Gracey, Shaun, Julia Ann, Autumn, Deandre and Rachel. We ended up winning six to one and now I have bragging rights till the next game!
