Today was a day of getting back into things. It was an okay day. Mrs. Mathis changed the seats around which kind of threw me off a little bit, but it was okay. She of course had to move some students because they couldn't stop talking. Then, they did their warm up which I took up and checked for a grade. It is a participation grade basically. You would be surprised at who still doesn't do it. It is really crazy how some students do not care. Then after their warm up they learned a new lesson. Mrs. Mathis taught them some simple exponent rules which took a little while. After she could tell that the students were getting restless she stopped and let them do their homework. It was a very simple lesson, but some students still didn't understand. Also, tomorrow I am going to Mrs. Mathis after school to go over things for my lesson. I am pretty nervous, but she is awesome in helping me. Im excited.
Today in my placement we started off the new week with announcements. The teacher informed the students, of what would happen during this week. She then started a new lesson. Today’s lesson was on multiplying fractions. Mrs. Smith took a completely different approach on this lesson. It wasn’t the way I was taught. She did a picture method. She used the denominator of both fractions to divide up a square horizontally and vertically. After this they shaded in squares based off of the numerator of each fraction. I found it very easy, and unique. The students also seemed to comprehend the method very well. I don’t believe it will take all week for them to master this subject. Hopefully, this will also be an easy test for them Friday. I also believe if she uses the straight multiplying method later in the week, they will understand it just as well. This doesn’t seem to be a hard topic for their level. Especially considering what they’ve been doing. Also a week from today I am scheduled to teach the introduction to dividing fractions. I’m looking forward to this a lot, and I hope they understand dividing as well as multiplying.
Today was very interesting. I enjoyed reading with the students before Thanksgiving Break, but the story they are on now is something I remember learning myself. They are reading about Helen Keller. I like reading this with them better than their other stories because it is true and I feel like I am actually teaching them something. I read with a student today and found myself explaining what every sentence meant. The story of Helen mainly focused on how she was different from everyone else and how she became famous even though she could not see or hear. When I got done reading with the student, the class began their math lesson for the day. I enjoy watching their math lesson because that was always my favorite subject at their age.
I got more involved with my placement today more than ever! First block my class didn’t really do anything because they went to the new weight room to learn about the machines. Each machine had its own purpose, such as working on abs, calfs, etc. The kids were very attentive and at the end of the class they got to try the machines out. I left right around the time they were trying the machines, and I was excited to come back that afternoon. When I came back for my sixth graders, we played wiffle ball and it was my team against Coach Frye’s team. Me and Coach were the pitchers and I had fun because I tricked the kids sometimes by fake throwing the ball. All the kids were laughing and smiling, even our special needs student who is always mad. I had the opportunity to get him out but I didn’t because I knew he was having fun and I didn’t want to spoil his fun. So I didn’t throw him out and Coach Frye gave me a thumbs up signaling that I made the right decision. I had a lot of fun today and I heard more students call my name more than all the other week combined.
Today was a slow day in my placement. The students did not have to take a South Carolina Facts quiz like they normally do because they did not have any facts last week. They came in and got a Woods Runner book. Mr. Leininger wanted them to finish the book today so they could move on. They read the last chapter and discussed the book. Mr. Leininger went over their sheets with them and made sure they understood the book and all of the themes. Then they changed classes. When second block came in, they finished reading the book also. Mr. Leininger went over their worksheet with them and made sure they had everything filled out correctly. I did not enjoy today because I did not get to do anything. I had to listen to the book be read to the students, and it was boring. I am looking forward to Wednesday and Thursday when I get to teach my lesson that Mr. Leininger will grade. I am nervous because I feel like he is going to grade me harshly, but I hope I do well.
Today the kids were wild! It was insane. All of them were talking and excited. All I could hear about was Christmas. Mrs. Gandy had the kids writing what they did for Thanksgiving break . Most of them had that they decorated their Christmas tree or played outside. They make me laugh when they present in front of the class; their true colors come out. They either talk loud enough for everyone to hear or they don’t talk laugh enough for the person next to them to understand them. They make me laugh. After we shared about our breaks, they danced to “Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree.” Watching them dance will never get old for me. They are so much fun. After they danced, they sat down on their spots and Mrs. Gandy read them “T’was the Night Before Christmas.” I knew most the story but I’m sure it was probably the first timethey had ever heard it. After she read to them, all they could do was tell us about Santa Claus and where he lives. It’s kind of weird being around all kind of people that believe in Santa. It was definitely cute though.
I had a great day in my placement this morning! The class began by analyzing a poem called “Richard Cory.” I felt incredibly prepared for this discussion, because I recently wrote a paper on this poem for English 101. Students shared what they thought certain parts of the poem meant on a much deeper level. They were all thinking critically and beyond surface level. I believe that so many of them are going to excel in their high school English classes next year. Although the next assignment did not look exciting on the lesson plan, the students’ critique of “The Cask of Amontillado,” was very impressive. As Mrs. Kahler reviewed each part of the short story, the class annotated and highlighted every section. We also read this story my English 101 class, so the topic was very relevant for me. I really think Mrs. Kahler’s class is going to prepare these students for many future classes.
Today was really good! The students were very well behaved considering it was a Monday and they had just got back from Thanksgiving Break. When I got to the school, the students were working on Christmas wreaths. If they needed help cutting them out, they came up to me and got them cut for them. After that, we had Morning Meeting. Since it was the first day of the new month, the class had a new calendar. This made them very excited. Mrs. Catoe explained that there will be a lot of Christmas activities to do over the next couple of weeks. I cannot wait! After Morning Meeting, the student went back to their desks and worked on their daily language and mathematics worksheets. The last activity the class did before I left was their spelling for the week. Since it is a Monday, they had a handwriting check. They had to write the word three times and circle the one best written. They did an awesome job!
Today I got to school and Mrs. Peake was not there. Mrs. Kahler came into the class and explained to me that Mrs. Peake was very sick. Mrs. Lyon was their substitute for the day. They had book work to do because that is what Mrs. Peake left for her emergency plans. It was a pretty laid back day for me. There wasn’t very much I could do, because it was bookwork and they all understood the concepts they covered very well. The students were very well behaved and I was very proud and thankful they were.
Today when I got to class I greeted the students and took some paper work to the office. Once they read for SSR, Mrs. Holley took the attendance then separated the class and left. The remaining students were left with me and Chief Smith to go through with the regular activity. First, we did our normal stretching routine and finished them up with fifteen push-ups, sit-ups, and mountain climbers. Next I got out the agility ladders and hurdles for ten minutes of a variety of different coordination and quickness drills. Lastly, the students went on a “run-walk” for twelve minutes. This is when the students would run around the gym for a minute and get a thirty second walk break then run again, and repeat until twelve minutes were up. Once they were complete, they were allowed to play basketball or volleyball for the remaining twenty minutes of class.
Dec 2/ 2013 Today during Mrs. Mason’s class the kids were pretty upbeat today. Especially for a Monday, it was probably from them being able to spend their ram bucks. A couple of the kids had their shoes off and were walking around in their socks because they had bought no shoes passes. I thought that this was pretty smart, it lets the kids see what being conservative and saving up their ram bucks is like. It also gives them incentive to be good during class because they will be rewarded. I began by reading to a couple of the kids. Mrs. Mason would choose the first kid and after we finished reading I would choose another. Once everyone had been given a chance to hang up their book bag and turn in everything we were sent down to the computer lab where we started taking our AR tests. Once everyone had finished their AR tests we headed back to the classroom. Mrs. Mason then called all the students to the floor and gave them their new vocabulary words. The kids were to group the words as usual and then put them in their plastic bags so they could study easier. The students were sent back to get their supplies and then went back to their seats where they began cutting and grouping the words. I walked around the class and helped any kid that was needing help. After a while all the kids had finished their words and were going back to sit at the board when it was time for me to leave.
Today was the first day back and it was a huge struggle. When I arrived I talked to Mrs. Joyner about her break before the kids came in. When the kids arrived we helped them pick their lunch and took the breakfast attendance. I could tell that it was the first day back because everyone was so sluggish and tired. Today made me really understand the energy that a teacher must have. After the kids got settled down they did their morning work and Mrs. Joyner went over it with them. After that it was time for them to go to the library like they do every Monday. While they were at the library me and Mrs. Joyner talked about my lesson plan for Thursday. She gave me some helpful tips on what to include and on what specifics she wanted me to teach. I also spent this time gathering my materials from her room that I needed for my lesson. Today made me so thankful to me her teacher cadet because she is so helpful!
