  1. Placement Day 25 (December 10)

Today in my placement the students took a test. It was a test on the past few lessons. One of these lessons was the lesson I taught. I will probably freak out if they didn’t do well on the test on the section I taught. As I was walking around though, it looked as if they pretty much knew what they were doing. I will probably grade those test tomorrow, so I will know how they did. While the students were taking the test I began grading her Algebra 1 test. They had a 10 point curve which I thought was really awesome. Even with the 10 point curve, some students still made like a 40. I thought this was terrible. I know sometimes you may not understand the content, but you can try to do a good job. I can tell how people are going to test based on how they perform in the classroom. It is very obvious how they will do. After I got done grading the test, I began to chat with the students. They are so involved in school and I love it. Also they look up to me as a teacher and I think that is really cool. One kid calls me Bre, which I don’t know if it is appropriate. I don’t know how he knows my name, but he talks to me like we are everyday friends. I think this is kind of weird, but he doesn’t take it out of control. He is very sweet tough, all of the students are, and I am definitely going to miss them so much. I was absolutely positive that I did not want to be a teacher, but now I am on the fence. The way the students depend on you to give them an education, is something that cannot compare. Also, tomorrow I am teaching another lesson. Mrs. Mathis is observing me, and I am kind of nervous.

  2. TODAY WAS AWESOME! I taught my lesson for Mrs. Sutusky to grade. I was nervous but it went really well. I have the best placement ever! The students were on task the whole time. They were so well behaved and well mannered. They got into the stations and had fun. I got to lead the whole class by myself, because they were so well behaved. Mrs. Peake and Mrs. Sutusky got to just sit in the back and talk and it was awesome. I loved being in control the class and getting to really be in the position of a teacher. I began the class by explaining to them that we are going to play review games for them to study for their test tomorrow. I then went around the room and explained what every station involves and what they have to do. I then broke them into groups and released them to go. The kids loved the stations. They had so much fun and so did I! I walked around and got involved with them. They are awesome! They were so funny. I was nervous about the play dough station but the kids did so much with it! They molded laptops and people. After we rotated for the last time I brought them together and gave them a worksheet I made. They had to match vocabulary with scenarios that I created. I let them work on it and then went over the answers with them. They got almost all of them right. It’s an awesome feeling to know I helped them prepare. Today really reinforced that teaching is something that I really want to do when I get older!

  3. Throughout a majority of the class period, Mrs. Kahler helped me finalize my lesson plans for my observation tomorrow. I’m super nervous, but Mrs. Kahler and Mrs. Sutusky have helped me prepare as much as I possibly can. I went to the library and checked out encyclopedias, newspaper articles, nonfiction books, and magazines that the students can use to learn how to cite sources correctly, tomorrow. I also recreated of one Mrs. Kahler’s old worksheets to use as a template for their Work Cited page tomorrow. While she and I were working on this assignment, the students were working on their web quest that they began yesterday. They did a great job at working silently and diligently. I hope that they have the same mindset when they enter the classroom, tomorrow. It will make my lesson go much smoother.

  4. Tuesday again. Or as I like to call it, Library Day. The worst day of the week cause my little kids aren’t in my class with me. They were working on a little worksheet that made them match opposite words like big and little, day and night, and tall and short. I guess they got it pretty easy because I didn’t get a chance to really walk around, Mrs. Gandy asked me to finish up her reading logs so she could do the calendar. I only had to do three or four other logs then I got to watch the kids fill out their number lines. One boy wrote something along the lines of “7, 8, 9, 21, 13, 55, 13, 14, 32, 67.” I told him what he had wrong and asked him to fix it. Other kids had to go and look at the calendar to figure out what to write. Either way it’s good because they are learning to use what’s around them in order to help their learning. Once she finished up with the calendar we went around to check the number lines. Almost everyone’s number line was correct I only had to correct a few of them. As soon as everyone was checked they all went to the library and we were left alone. I mainly just looked over the stuff I am getting graded on for my lesson. I’m really excited to teach!

  6. Today in my placement, we began watching the morning news show. After the news show, I went around and checked last night’s homework. The students still seem to have a problem with even attempting their homework. As for some of the ones who try, they do very poorly, or guess on it. After I checked homework, Mrs. Smith started reviewing it. She followed her review by a lesson. The lesson was the same thing the students have been doing, just more in detail. The students learned how to divide mixed numbers. They don’t seem to have much trouble with this during class discussion, yet on their test it shows otherwise. I think it’s just from a lack of studying, and double checking their work. Hopefully they will finish out the week strong!

  7. Today was a health day, like every Tuesday and Thursday is. This is usually not the kid’s favorite day, because they are a very energetic group. My kids learned about alcohol and its negative influence and characteristics. Coach Frye made a power point stating all this such as, alcohol can cause drowsiness, vomiting, and alcohol poisoning. After that the kids got into groups of three or four, and got a magazine to find an article about alcohol.
When the kids found their individual articles, they presented them to the class by saying what they were trying to say in the article, what it meant to them, and overall analyzed it. The seventh graders took their muscle test, which they had been reviewing for a couple of weeks. I helped Coach Frye grade them, and his class had about eight 100’s. So overall the class did excellent, and after the kids were done they were allowed to play basketball. I was really proud of both classes today, because both performed well on their different assignments.

  8. Today when I arrived at my placement, we have a very special guest all the way from the North Pole! Santa Claus came to visit! The class was very excited. The first 30 minutes of my placement I spent the time help Santa Claus out. I helped by getting people in line to get their picture taken and by keeping my class occupied. Mrs. McFarland was busy helping him also, so I took the class to the bathroom. When I returned the class took their pictures with them and then they had to go to map testing sadly. When Santa Claus left, I was then all alone. I then finished putting the wreaths together. I had to cut someone’s hands out for them and then put theirs together. Once I was finished, I then left.

  9. Today was an easy day at my placement. First period began the day by taking their South Carolina facts quiz that they did not take yesterday because of my lesson. Once they finished their quiz Mr. Leininger taught the last lesson for their antebellum unit. He covered the presidential election of 1860 which is when Abraham Lincoln was elected. It caused the southern states to succeed. He asked me to team teach with him, but he got so into the lesson I did not interrupt him. He does such an amazing job and I got caught up in watching his lesson. I love watching him teach. I learn right along with the students most days and it is amazing. When second period came in, I went over their South Carolina facts with them. I love second period. They are so well behaved and interactive. When they finished copying down their facts, Mr. Leininger began the lesson with them. They are so interactive and truly enjoy learning. I wish I could spend more time with them. I love interacting with them and discussing history with them.

  10. Dec 10/2013 Today started off like yesterday. After our usual announcements and the pledge of allegiance we were told that the computer lab teacher was going to have a class today, so the kids were going to have to take their tests in the back on the laptops again today. So after I read with a couple of the kids and helped them take their tests on the laptops Mrs. Mason told them to return back to their seat. She then explained to them that I would be taking any Candy Cane money, which is where they pay a quarter to send a candy cane to a friend or themselves. Once I had gotten everybody who wanted some Mrs. Mason told them to sit in front of the board. She went over their vocabulary from yesterday. She then asked me to go to the librarian and ask for a camera so I could take a picture of all the kids for a project they were going to be doing later. Once I went down there and got the camera she told the kids what we were doing and where they were to stand when I take their picture. She called up about three kids at the time to wait to take their picture. At first we had some camera difficulties but we got it eventually and every student had their picture taken. The kids then returned back to their seats to read quietly before I had to leave to return back to school.

  11. Today the student’s kept to their regular routine. When I arrived I talked to Mrs. Joyner until the kids came down from breakfast again. When they arrived we did the lunch count for the day and they unpacked. After they unpacked we did the breakfast count for the next day. After that the kids began their morning work. Today they had to find words in a word search and for some of them it was hard but for others it was very easy. I love walking around and helping the kids. It makes me feel like I am really helping them and that I am actually doing something. After they did their morning work they went over it. When they were finished going over it they did their morning meeting. They read a Christmas story in their morning meeting and they were all so excited! After that they had silent reading time for fifteen minutes. I walked around and watched them read. After that I checked their reading logs and gave them ram bucks if they did them. After that it was time for me to go.
