Placement Day 23 (December 6)

  1. My placement today went so well! When I got to the classroom, the students were working on their paper chains that will be the garland on their class tree. I had to help some of them because they were doing it wrong. It was very entertaining. After that, we had our Morning Meeting. Then, the students started on their language tests. While they worked, I worked individually with a student name Landon. He has a learning disability, although I am not sure what it is. He got to read a couple of books to me and then I read to him. He is a very good reader. He puts animation and tone into the stories, and it is so darling. After we worked on that, helped another student read. His name was Carl, and he was not a very good reader. As the students finished their tests, they were to come back one by one and make an estimation for the Estimation Jar. Once all estimations were written, I got to count how many candy canes were in the jar. The winner, Alex, got a treat because he guessed the closest without going over! I had a very good day in placement!

  2. Today when I walked into my placement, I got right to work. I counted the students books for their 100 book challenge. I love seeing their faces light up when I call their name. Each student will run up to me to hug me, grab their folders and put their books they are so proud of up. When I got done with the 100 book challenge account, it was bathroom and water time. After that, the students went over the month, day, date and weather. After Conner read, Ms. Pigg read a book of hers to the class. It had to do with Christmas since that’s the holiday coming up. Today the students had an Arbor Day program to participate in at 8:30 so I got to watch thirty minutes of that. After the program, the students would get to plant a tree. I missed that part, but the students seemed to be excited about it.

  3. Today when I went to my placement the class was working on their bell work. Majority of them was studying for their science test. When I arrived Mrs. McFarland asked me to take the class to the restroom because they were having a program at 8:40. When I returned to the classroom she wanted me to read to them. I was nervous because I had not read to them since the last time when I started stuttering. I read them two books, If You Take a Mouse to The Movies and Mooseltoe! I was very excited when I saw Mooseltoe. I remember my 1st grade teacher giving me that book when I was in 1st grade. When I finished reading, I realized that I didn’t stutter at all. I was happy. When I finished it was time to go to the program. Megan and me sat in the back so we wouldn’t interrupt the program when we left. The 1st grade and 2nd grade all sung. They did a very good job.

  5. Well the weather benefited my placement today in an odd way, because it was in the 80’s in the summer! My placement was benefited because we got to play flag football today! But my seventh graders just had a free day inside, and I hoped into a basketball game that was being played and I made some awesome threes! My kids crack me up because, they think I’m the next Lebron James. They think I’m still great even when I miss open shots, and that’s surprising because at the high school you get told you “suck” if that happens.
The fun really started to happen when I came back for my six graders. After my class got dressed out and stretched, I took them out to the practice field with Coach Frye. My team was a little different this time, I had Zack, Mike, Cara, Katylnn, Autumn, and Shaun. The team did really good and we ended up tying with Coach Frye’s team, so he couldn’t talk any smack! I have more fun every time I step into that gym, I wouldn’t pick any other placement!

  6. Today was pretty good. Very much the usual. They started off doing a simple worksheet. After that they worked on their calendar writing down their date the number of the day on the calendar. Then she asked me to get the kids who hadn’t finished cutting out the elf hat that they had colored the day before. I called them over two at the time and told them what to do. After all of them came over I had to glue down the hats onto the elf heads. I was so entrapped in what I was doing I missed what story Mrs. Gandy read to them. I finished up my gluing and moved on to passing out all the brag tags. Some of the kids had eight or so tags, but others had only one. It’s a little disappointing but they’re little and have plenty of time. I finished up the brag tags and moved to sit with the two that were coloring in the lights and just kind of kept an eye on them. Then they had to move on to something else. Since I had plenty of time until I left, I played the game with them. It’s a fun game. You match clothes pins that had letters on them with the picture whose beginning letter matches. I finished up two little boards and had to leave.

  7. When I returned to my placement on this day, I realized how much I truly cared about each and every one of them. I missed them so much during the few days that I was out. The class began with a warm up. The students had to complete a worksheet of analogies. Although at first the task seemed too simple, many of the students realized that they needed this review. With all the new information and stories that they have been analyzing and memorizing lately, I think that this warm up was a good change of pace. It gave the students a fresh perspective on a skill that they already have a basic knowledge of. It will also help them in their writing class. Mrs. Kahler and Mrs. Peake do a great job of collaborating and helping these eighth grader learn information that will help them in more than one subject area.

  8. I enjoyed my placement today. Typically Fridays are test days for my students. However, considering Mrs. Smith was out one day this week, and some students were on a field trip another day this was a review day. Mrs. Smith continued her lesson today from the previous day, and also gave them a review worksheet to do with it. Review days are probably the most active days for me. This really gives me a chance to move around and help the students with their work. This also gives Mrs. Smith some time to catch up on her things. As usual, most students caught on well, and understood it. Although, of course there are individuals who seem to be completely lost, with every bit of it. Even though it concerns me, and my teacher I don’t think it’s fair to blame. It’s always the same student(s) who seem to be lost. The lack of effort in the individuals, is the problem. No matter how much you reach out to these students, and answer all of their questions they still won’t try. They expect you to spoon feed every answer to them. I hope their perspective on school changes quick.

  9. Today when I got to class I greeted the students and they sat in the bleachers and waited for SSR to begin. After the reading, our class had to grab some chairs that had been set up for the basketball game that took place. We then had to move some wrestling mats to the gym from a truck, which would be used for the upcoming wrestling tournament this weekend. When we were finished the class stretched as a whole, and ended with fifteen push-ups and sit-ups, then a minute of mountain-climbers. For the rest of class the students got to have the “day off” and were allowed to play basketball, volleyball, or could throw the football. Today was a pretty great day for the students, as well as for me, considering they didn’t have to any exercise routines and could play for most of the remaining time in class.

  10. Dec 6/ 2013 Today during Mrs. Mason’s class it was my day to teach. I had been given the papers of what I was going to do that day from Mrs. Mason and I had looked over them throughout the week. I was going to give their spelling tests to them and then proceed to explain how they were going to play a math game. Mrs. Mason helped me by being my partner in the math game. She ran me through all of what we were going to do and allowed me to explain it to the kids. The kids were great and didn’t give me any trouble at all. After I had explained the instructions on how to play the game, Mrs. Mason and I cut the game board out how it was supposed to be and actually played the game to show the kids how to. The game was played by first cutting out the addition sentences and the multiplication cards and then they were to be paired up with the correct ones. The kids had fun playing the game but Alex didn’t have a partner so I worked with him. After we played the game and I only had about 15 minutes left in class, the cake I surprised Mrs. Mason and the class with was given out and the kids got to eat some cake during class. I helped Mrs. Mason pass out the plates and napkins and she cut the cake and gave it to the kids. The kids were having a blast and they were very respectful they all used their manners. I had to leave shortly after everything was passed out but before I did all the kids wanted a hug so I gave a hug to all the kids and returned to school. It was one of my favorite days because I got to see all the kids happy and excited, and Mrs. Mason was very grateful.

  11. Today we started again with Channel One News and attendance. Then Mrs. Peake let the students come to the Smart Board and they had to match the synonym with the vocabulary word. Then they got to continue to work on their paper. I got to walk around and listen to what some of the students were writing about. They are all really good and really creative. One boy is writing one that is most likely to be seen on Moonshiners. Another is writing one to go on The Walking Dead. They are all so proud of them and they want me to read them. I love that I can get involved with them and they respond to it. It makes me feel better about teaching my lesson. I know that they will get into it and won’t leave me hanging by myself. I also know they will be active in my lesson, but they won’t get too crazy and misbehave. Mrs. Peake and I have a meeting today after school to talk about what I’m going to teach for my lesson that Mrs. Sutusky is going to grade. I’m so excited to come up with creative ideas for my kids to review their vocabulary!

  12. Today was another hectic day! We had a substitute today and it is just so hard to keep things from not getting crazy. When I arrived I answered some questions for the substitute. When the kids arrived I helped them pick their lunch and the substitute did the breakfast count. After that they did their morning work and I walked around and helped them. The substitute then went over the morning work with them. The kids got upset because everything was going so much different than usual. It is really hard to do the things the same that another teacher does when there is a substitute. After the morning work we did the morning meeting and it was a little bit different too and the kids keep trying to correct her and I felt so bad. After the morning meeting they took their tests. I walked around and watched them do their tests. This process was a little bit different too and I just hope it didnt affect the kids grades.

  13. Today was a great day at my placement. It was a day for me to take a breather after teaching yesterday. I began class by going over the South Carolina fact with the students. I enjoy getting to explain parts of history to them and to relate it to high school and real life. After I finished going over the South Carolina facts with the students, Mr. Leininger reviewed the lesson I covered yesterday before moving on to the next lesson. He taught one of my favorite lessons today! He covered Brookes vs. Sumner which is about a South Carolinian Senate member beating a Senator from Massachusetts in the head with a cane. The man eventually dies from his injuries, but it was the only time in the history of the United States that violence occurred on the Senate floor. I think it is so cool to see how big of a role South Carolina plays in causing the Civil War. I love seeing Mr. Leininger teach this lesson because he really gets into it and the kids love it. He also covered the Underground Railroad with the class today. The students loved seeing how slaves were helped to escape slavery. I am going to hate leaving my placement because I enjoy seeing Mr. Leininger teach so much. I wish there were more teachers like him. He is so interactive, creative, and supportive. I could not have asked for a better teacher to work with. Although I am a little upset he did not tell me until today that I have to create my own PowerPoint and everything for the lesson I am going to teach Monday, but I am excited to see what I can do!
