Placement Day 20 (December 3)

  1. Today the students mainly did independent work. While they were doing their warm up, Mrs. Mathis passed out the work she had graded. I helped the students with their warm up, and it was alright. After their warm up, Mrs. Mathis went over the test. Some students did not do a good job, but some did a great job. You can tell by the way they interact in a class if they’re going to do good or bad on a test. I can tell anyways. After Mrs. Mathis went over the test they began to work on some classwork. They are doing a really easy lesson. They are learning how to do the order of operations using exponents with it. They are catching on really easily, and I think that is an awesome thing. It makes me happy when the students understand what Mrs. Mathis is teaching. Some days the students don’t understand, but today they really did understand and it make me happy. I am so nervous about tomorrow because I am teaching a lesson. I am scared because Mrs. Mathis is such a good teacher, and I don’t want to be terrible. I don’t want the students to compare me to Mrs. Mathis. Let’s pray I do alright!

  2. Day 20:
Today in my placement we focused on the same lesson as yesterday. We did multiplying fractions. However, Mrs. Smith did the lesson a completely different way. Instead of using the picture method, she simply multiplied across. This is something I was wondering if she would do. For most of the class I went to the teacher work room to cut out something for Mrs. Smith. After helping her out with that I came back and started reviewing the lesson with the kids. I would give them two problems to multiply, and then work it out with them. The kids seemed to catch on really well. The only problem seemed to be reducing large numbers. Other than that the multiplying across wasn’t hard at all, unless it was a large number. I believe the students will master this easily.

  3. Today was adventurous in a way. I got to experience a few new things. Reading with students was not needed today, so I wrote down their books for their 100 book challenge. Then, after watching them complete their morning work and call out terms I had forgotten about, they took their daily morning trip to the restrooms. Ms. Pigg also wrote out all the notes and details I will need for my lesson Thursday. When they got back from the restroom they did the month, day, date and weather. After Ms. Pigg finished weekly news updates, she asked the reader for the day, Natalie, to go to the chair to be prepared to read her book. Natalie did so well reading her book. It was noticeable she had been practicing. As I left today, they were starting their math lesson. I hope to teach as well as Ms. Pigg does when I teach on Thursday.

  4. Today was business as usual. The students had started copying down their South Carolina Facts again today. Mr. Leininger went over the facts with first period since he did not send them to me in advance. I watched him do that and mimicked him with second period. I love going over the South Carolina Facts with the students because it gives me a chance to explain various events from various time periods throughout history. After the students copied down their facts, Mr. Leininger started to go over the next key event that led to the Civil War. He went over the PowerPoint about the Compromise of 1850 with the students. I love watching him teach! I think I enjoy watching him lecture more than the students do. He is so animated and does an amazing job relating the information to the students. I hope I can do half as well as he does when I teach tomorrow. I am so nervous about not being as entertaining as Mr. Leininger is. I am prepared for my lesson and it has been approved by Mr. Leininger, so I guess tomorrow will tell how good I am.

  5. Today was way better than yesterday. They were pretty good. When I walked in I had to help Mr. Branham give Mrs. Mason her Teacher of the Year award. She was really happy about that. I went back to my class and they had already started calendar. I walked in and immediately started try to get the kids to fix backwards numbers and things of that nature. After that Mrs. Gandy told the class to write the numbers from starting from five in their line of ten boxes. You would be amazed at the backwards numbers. I was told to go around with a highlighter and check their numbers. Only a few got all of them right. Most of them had backwards fives, sixes, and nines. The number of backwards twelves, thirteens, and fourteens that I had to try and explain was exasperating. I didn’t get it. Mrs. Gandy goes over the number with them, literally, every day. I guess I should cut them some slack, but they should be doing better. Afterwards they went to the library and I had to leave before they got back.

  6. Today was a much slower day in my placement, but it was still enjoyable. When class began, we reviewed how irony is used in “The Cask of Amontillado.” Each student came up with ten examples that they found in the story. This was not in the lesson plans, but Mrs. Kahler felt that the students needed this extra time to help the students understand the deeper meaning of this text. I think that this flexible teaching style is the most effective. Lesson plans are great, but they must often be adjusted. The schedule should never compromise a student’s ability to comprehend the information. This is an important lesson that I have learned from my placement. After we had completed the irony chart, the class listened to a reading of “The Cask of Amontillado,” as Mrs. Kahler took notes on the smart board. Each student copied the notes and listened intently. They also engaged in a group discussion while analyzing the text. It was a very productive day for the English 1 class.

  7. In my placement today instead of physical education, my students were involved in their weekly Tuesday health education class. So the kids weren’t exactly thrilled, but most of the kids were well behaved and got their work done. Each of my class did different lessons because my seventh graders learned about drug abuse while my sixth graders learned about the kinds of drugs. When I came back for my sixth grade class I held the door for the kids and passed out their crossword puzzles. Some of the kids thought they couldn’t do it but they all accomplished it.
I worked one on one with my buddy Thomas, and I taught him how I was taught to do crosswords. Thomas was very attentive and if I had to choose my favorite student it would be Thomas. After they were all done with their drug lesson, they were allowed to play basketball. Me, Thomas, Erin, and Zack all played a basketball game, and I messed around with Zack and Erin by dribbling fast and they couldn’t keep up. Overall I worked more on my relationships with the kids and helped my teachers with organizing athletic folders, and help the student with their school work!

  8. Today when I arrived to my placement the class was working on bell work. Mrs. McFarland called Sebastian and Lacey to the table I was at and we began to work on crafts. They had Christmas trees that were already cut out and was hole punched. What they did was take colored paper and glue it over the holes on the back. When they were finished, the front looked like a Christmas tree with colored lights on it. While I sat there and helped a couple of kids do their crafts, they sat there and talked to me. It’s amazing how much they have progressed with me. The first day they didn’t say a word to me and now they are talking to me nonstop. After I helped 5 kids with their trees it was time for me to go.

  9. Mrs. Peake was back today! The students got to both watch Channel One News and their own school news show. They had some computer trouble and it took a little while to get everything started. But once that was over, Mrs. Peake began a vocabulary lesson with them. She went through a PowerPoint with them on the words. In the PowerPoint she used relatable topics and made the kids use context clues to try and figure out the definition on their own. They has a worksheet that they had to fill out. After that she gave them the real definition. I thought that was a very good technique to use, so the kids will actually understand the word, rather than them just memorizing the definition. She and I discussed plans for my next lesson. This is the one Sutusky is going to grade and she and I want it to be good. She and I talked about us doing a review game for vocabulary.

  10. Today when I got to class I greeted the students then waited for the SSR bell to ring. After reading for SSR, I took the attendance and waited for Mrs. Holley to instruct the class what to do. Today we were going to do agilities, which consist of using different equipment to perform different sorts of movements to help you become quick and coordinated. After going over vocabulary words again, students were told to dress out. When they returned they did a run/walk for five minutes before the main activity actually started. The agility drills consisted of four stations. For example, one station was box jumps, this is where five boxes are placed each one getting taller and taller, that the students would have to jump on top of. Also, there were other stations with jump ropes, and another with an agility ladder, where the students would perform a variety of different footwork drills. I reminds me of when I was in ninth grade doing these drills for the first time. Once they were finished, Mrs. Holley allowed them to play basketball or volleyball for the remaining twenty minutes of class.

  11. Dec 3/ 2013 Today during Mrs. Mason’s class we did our usual routine. The kids were coming in the classroom after I had arrived. Not too long after the morning announcements came on. The kids did the pledge and the moment of silence and then sat down and started quietly reading. Not too long after that the principal Mr.Branahm came in and awarded Mrs. Mason that she was Mount Pisgah’s teacher of the year. All the kids were excited and clapping and Mrs. Mason was pretty happy. She had her picture taken and was given her rewards and then it was back to normal. The kids were then told to take out their science books and flip to a certain page. They were then told to come down and sit in front of the white board. She then went over the lesson which was about sound. The kids had the string through the cup and were plucking it to make a sound. It was about the same thing we did over Thanksgiving and some of the cups still had their turkey ornaments on them so the kids were laughing. The kids had a lot of fun during this project and so did I. I had to leave not too long after to return to school.

  12. Today when I arrived I talked to Mrs. Joyner again until the kids came up from breakfast. We helped them pick out their lunch choices again and we also did the breakfast count. After that they did their morning work and then we went over it. After that I helped them sharpen their pencils. It amazes me how excited they get over the smallest of things. After sharpening their pencils they had their morning meeting. In their morning meeting they talked about words that begin with the letters “Bl”. They called them blend words. They also read stories with some of those words in them. When they were finished with that they did a worksheet on blend words and they got to color them. They are always so excited to learn new things, and I only hope they are like that when I teach them my lesson.
