Placement Day 26 (December 11)

  1. Placement Day 26

Today I taught my other lesson. This was really nerve racking. I think I was intimidated by Mrs. Mathis observing me because it is her classroom. I feel like she will probably want me to teach like she does. If I don't cover something she wants me too then she might have taken points off. Anyway, I started the class with a few rounds of Bingo. This was really fun. The Bingo game was about squares and square roots. The students really enjoyed it, atleast they act like they did. After we were done playing the game, I began to go over some notes. This I don't like doing because I know that it is boring. I taught them how to find a square root and how to solve an equation with a radical in the equation. They seemed like they understood how to do it. This made me happy. I was really nervous though. At one point I messed up because I gave an example of something that wasn't even what I was teaching. It was so embarrassing because I knew Mrs. Mathis knew I had done that. I tried to recover the best I could, but I don't know how that went. After I taught my lesson, I gave the students the option to either work on their classwork or play Bingo. I only did this because the things on the Bingo are so essential to this lesson, and it will really help them. Unfortunately it is all memorization. I hate that, but hopefully they will be able to remember them all. I was very nervous about teaching my lesson, but it is over now. I think Mrs. Mathis graded me very hard. I hope I did well.

  2. I did a lot in my placement today. As soon as I arrived to the class, Mrs. Catoe had me go through the students’ take-home folders and make stacks of different assignments they had completed for homework. Eighty-eight papers later, I was finally finished…with that task. Then, Mrs. Catoe gave me the class’ math work from yesterday. I had to go through each problem and make sure they did them right. It has been a long time since I have done regrouping subtraction, and although it may sound easy, it gave me a headache. After I finished grading papers, I had yet another task to complete. Mrs. Catoe left the classroom to go make herself a cup of coffee. That meant that I had to watch the class all by myself. They were working on their Grinch packets and we had “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” playing on the television. I was worried that they would misbehave without Mrs. Catoe in there. But, they were very quiet and focused on their work. I felt like a successful teacher!

  3. After the morning news show, I did the normal routine of checking students’ homework. A lot of students were absent, and a lot of students didn’t complete their homework. I still absolutely cannot stand the fact that I have to give students zeros. I believe that’s what they deserve yes, but it bothers me that they choose, and accept that zero on several occasions. Even if it is just middle school it still matters to me, and should to them. I just don’t believe they will ever understand that. Today we went over homework as a class. Afterwards, Mrs. Smith did a few review problems on the board for the students. Then she assigned them homework. I had the luxury of running copies for her, and fighting the copier machine. After the first class left, I did some review with the other class. They can do it easily step by step together, however on their own they mess up. I enjoyed my placement, and getting involved today.

  4. Today went well. When I walked in my kids were working on a worksheet. The worksheet was working with rhyming words. One girl kept on and kept on asking me which words rhymed. Eventually I had to just tell her to go sit down. Even as Mrs. Gandy went over the answers she came up asking what was right. She just wasn’t listening. After they got done answering the questions, Mrs. Gandy moved on to the calendars. The last thing they do with the calendars is how many days we’ve been in school, turns out it’s been 78 days. Only 102 days left in my senior year. They finished with the calendar and started their number line. One girl who is pretty much as far behind as you can get in kindergarten asked me for help so I helped her out. After Mrs. Gandy congratulated her, she told Mrs. Gandy that I had helped her and gave me a great big thank you. I made me feel really good that she was so excited that I helped her. Next they moved onto the rug and Mrs. Gandy read “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” one of my favorites. She had to stop a little ways in because it was group time. The rest of my time went quickly. Kind of made me sad to leave them. I just love my class!

  5. When I came in this morning, the kids were going to the weight room and started their workout. Which consisted of some new workouts, such as dumbbell bench press, bicep curls, etc. I demonstrated the dumbbell bench press with ten pound weights, with was light but I would have been embarrassed if I tried something too heavy. After that I walked around and then left to go to the high school. I was really excited to come back because we started catching the football today with the sixth graders.
My sixth graders when I came back were practicing catching the football, which is comprised of making a diamond with your hands when the ball is above your waist. When the ball is below your waist you simply connect your pinkies and catch it kind of like a ground ball in baseball. My next class started off with stretching and running, then played flag tag which is tag but with flags and I played with them. I helped Katlynn with her throwing today because I could tell she was struggling, but she eventually got it and I gave her a high five! I absolutely enjoy seeing the look on those kid’s face when they succeed.

  7. Today the class was finished with map testing. This made me very happy because I now can interact with the kids this week. Today Mrs. McFarland wanted me to quiz each student on the words they have learned this past week. I was able to quiz 6 students. While I was quizzing them I noticed that they all struggled on the same words. Majority of them all didn’t know the word, “surprise”. I had to stop in the middle of giving one of the student’s a test because Mrs. McFarland wanted me to take the children to the bathroom. When I returned I had enough time to test 2 more students and then I had to leave. When I was leaving, Mrs. McFarland had the students on the rug and was reading them a book.

  8. I began class today with first period by going over two sets of South Carolina facts. They had to complete two sets because they are a day behind due to my lesson on Monday. The students seem to enjoy it when I go over the facts with them. I love how it allows me to discuss a variety of topics with them. They are a lot of fun to interact with and it gives me a chance to practice my classroom management skills. Once I finished going over the facts with the students, Mr. Leininger finished going over yesterday’s lesson with them. Once they finished their notes they played review games. Mr. Leininger gave them the opportunity to pick charades, hangman, or Pictionary to go over their terms. The students were on teams and chose one of the options each time it was their turn. It was extremely entertaining to watch the students play those three games with terms like slavery, Brookes vs Sumner, and fire-eaters. Everyone in the room could not stop laughing at certain times. I wish we still did things like this in high school. When second period came in, I went over their facts with them. Once I finished going over their facts, Mr. Leininger was going to finish their lesson from yesterday, but the students requested I teach them instead! I was in shock. I could not believe they wanted me to teach them instead of Mr. Leininger. That has been the highlight of my placement thus far. I could not have asked for a better compliment than to be chosen to teach a lesson over the 2012 District Teacher of the Year who is a phenomenal teacher. Mr. Leininger told me to go for it, so I taught them the rest of their lesson. I was in awe the entire time. I still cannot believe the students chose me over him.

  9. Dec 11/ 2013 Today was a normal Wednesday. The kids took their AR tests and then returned to class to do inside trades on their books. Once every student had their new books they went back to their seat to read quietly. I read with a couple of students before Mrs. Mason asked me to get the Candy Cane money if any of them had it. A lot of kids brought their money today so it took me a little while to get all of their names down and who they wanted to send the Candy Cane to. After I had gotten everybody who wanted to send one, Mrs. Mason asked them to return to their seats and grab their library books. Once every kid had grabbed their books we headed to the library. Once we got to the library the librarian asked the students to have a seat and read quietly. She then asked the girls if they had any books they wanted to check out. Once the girls had got their books she then allowed the boys to get up and check out their books. Once everyone had checked out the books they wanted she then explained what we were going to be doing today. She told them that they were going to be reading Briar Rabbit. After they had finished Paul Bunyan they were going to start on the Briar Rabbit book and movie. The kids got really excited over the movie and I got to watch a little bit of it before I had to return back to school.

  11. I was observation while I taught my lesson, today, and it was an interesting experience. To begin the lesson, I had an elaborate hook about how citations are important because it is the address of the resource, but I completely rushed through it. I think my nerves affected the speed at which I was talking. I handed out worksheets that I had adapted and gave each group a newspaper, encyclopedia, nonfiction book, and a magazine. They each had to take one of these sources and cite it on the template. They finished this worksheet much quicker than expected, so I asked them to create a rough draft of these citations. Overall, I think that the lesson moved much too quickly, but I still enjoyed moving around the classroom and helping each student one-on-one. These kids are awesome, and their ability to stay on task and work diligently always impresses me. Next time, I will focus on slowing down and calming myself. I will also work on creating a much more elaborate hook to engage each of them. It was a great learning experience!

  12. Today was a pretty relaxed day for me. I got the class and waited for the students to all be seated. I took attendance and the students watched Channel One News and their own morning news show. Today the students had to take their vocabulary test they studied for when we played my review game. I was knew that would do great because they did awesome when we played the review games. I went and ran off copies of the test for Mrs. Peake. She broke the test into three parts. They had to determine what part of speech the word was; they had to label the context clues in the sentence and they also had to match the definition to the word. Mrs. Peake told me I could grade the papers to see how the students did. She also told me she would let me grade other class’ papers to compare the two, because I saw the differences in how the two classes handled the review games.
