Today went by very quickly. I was busy from the time I walked in until the time I left. My tasks are very simple but some take up more time than others. First I organized the students’ 100 book challenge folders and counted them for the books they took home last night to read and what each brought back. Then, by the time I finished that, Ms. Pigg asked me to cut out papers for her. They were small pieces of paper for her to do each students weekly behavior report on. I did not know she had to do things like that. After I cut the papers out, she asked me to read with another student like I did yesterday. This student was pretty quick at reading, but I notice the students do not understand the “sounding it out” method too well. That is how I learned to read so I make them sound words out themselves. They seem to learn the words well by the end of the story. I hope they are actually learning these words. It makes me feel really good to help students, especially individually.
Today was a good day in my placement. The students were very well behaved today, unlike yesterday. When I arrived, Mrs. Catoe asked me to cut some things out for her for Thanksgiving activities. After I finished with that, I joined the rest of the class for Morning Meeting. I am trying to memorize what Mrs. Catoe does with the calendar since I will be leading it Friday. After that, I went to the library to get the school camera. I was asked by Mrs. Catoe to take some pictures of the school and the students for an article they are all writing. I called them one by one into the hallway to take their picture while they all worked on their final draft for the class book. I then came back to class and helped Mrs. Catoe put the book pages in order. By that time, it was time for me to leave. It was a very productive hour and I felt very helpful. Mrs. Catoe is sure to always share her appreciation for me. That is probably one of my favorite things about her!
Today when arriving at Mt. Pisgah I went straight to the cafeteria to help Mrs. Joyner with breakfast duty. I got a chance to sit and talk to some of the kids while they ate, which was really awesome. After they all ate we went back up to the room. When we got there we helped them choose what to eat for lunch, and then start their morning work. While they were doing their morning work I counted all their ram bucks for them. Mrs. Joyner told me that later that day she would take them to the prize room to cash in their ram bucks. They were so excited when I called their number of ram bucks out and some even bowed. After that we went to the rug and did the morning meeting. At the morning meeting we counted down the days until Thanksgiving Break! The kids were really excited about that and they showed me the Indian head bands they colored after I left yesterday. After the morning meeting we had silent reading time and I took two kids aside and worked with them on a list of words they were having trouble on. When they were done I read with a different student and taught her how to rename a book. After that it was time for me to leave so I said goodbye to the kids and left!
When I got to class we read for fifteen minutes then took the attendance. I’m pretty surprised on how we have perfect attendance close to everyday. Today is the day some of the class leaves to take reproductive health, while I stay back with the remaining students. The first thing we did was our usual stretches that consist of lunges, slides, Russian march, back peddling, and sprints. Next, the class then did fifteen push-ups and sit-ups. You can really tell which students are pushing themselves and which are just going through the motions. After that, the class had to do their twelve minute run/walk. The last thing we did was called an “Indian run”. This is when the class jogs around the gym in a line and whoever is in the back of the line, runs to the front to lead the line, and when that person gets to the front the next person in the back of the line sprints to the front and leads. After about ten laps they were done and allowed to play basketball for the rest of the class.
The Middle School i attend for my placement, had the opportunity of being on the "Schools To Watch" list. Considering they're on this, they will have several visitors at their school today. Unfortunately for me that means i couldn't attend my placement. Our principal wants to make sure everything goes well for them. Especially considering this is an outstanding opportunity for them.
Today when I arrived to my placement, Mrs. McFarland had work on my table for me to do. Today I was tearing out pages of their math books. There were about 8 pages I had to tear out. When I was finished, I started passing the books back out but Mrs. McFarland stopped me. It turned out she had even more work for me to tear out. It was about 8 more pages. When I was finished I passed the books back to the students. While I was waiting to see what else I could do, I watched Mrs. McFarland do the 100 book challenge with each student. I was amazed at how well the class had progress with the challenge. They all moved up 2 levels in their reading. When she was finished with doing the challenge we both talked about me teaching next Tuesday. I asked her what standard they were on and she gave me some ideas. Before they started to sit down and read she gave me more work to do. She wanted me to make packets. I didn't finish the packets because I was already 10 minutes late from the usual time I leave. This was one of the busiest days I have had yet! Exciting, but hard.
Today is Tuesday, library day. Also we got a new boy in our class. He was not anywhere near shy which is good for a new Kindergartener. Mrs. Gandy asked a question and the boy jumped out of his chair to answer her. They were all righting in their journals the sentence “We are going to the computer lab” and drawing a picture to go with their message. After most of them were done Mrs. Gandy told them to get out their calendars and they stared with their usual thing. It was an average day. After they finished the calendar, Mrs. Gandy sent the students to the library Then Mrs. Gandy got a message from the librarian that she wanted to know how many steps the kids had gotten on their 100 Book Challenge. The 100 Book Challenge is where students in Kindergarten and First grade are supposed to read at home and at school for 100 hours combined. Every time they read it is called a step. I was proud of most the kids they did really well and had up to 84 steps. Others however, hadn’t read since August. I was kind of disappointed in the kids who had less than 50 steps. The average I would say was probably about 60. After I finished I went and sat with Mrs. Gandy and Mrs. Barrett and we talked about my lessons. It was very calm today.
Today in class the kids were seated and told to do their usual routine. I read with a couple of the students before we went to take our AR tests. Today we had to hurry and take our AR tests because there was a class coming to the computer lab at 8. So we got all of our tests done and returned back to class. Once we returned back to class the students were reading silently until Mrs. Mason told them to get their turkey letters. Once everyone found their letters they were seated in front of the board. Mrs. Mason then told them that today we would be revising their rough drafts and then allowing them to write their final copies on the designated sheets of paper. I helped a couple of the students who were having spelling and punctual mistakes. Mrs. Mason started with one half of the room while I did the other half. We continued to do this until it was time for me to return back to school. - Christian
