Placement Day 12 (November 18)

  1. Today Mrs. Mathis was not here. There was a substitute in her classroom. Mrs. Kahler asked me and Katie to make a bulletin board because their school is getting observed the next two days. The bulletin board was a board to put up work that the students have done that is really good. The board turned out pretty well. Also, Mrs. Kahler was so excited about us doing this board. She cares so much about her job and it shows very well. She gets excited about everything, and loves her students, and cares about their education. I think that is what a teacher needs. They need that passion of learning, and Mrs. Kahler really shows her passion.

  2. Today was sort of an off day. When I arrived I learned that Mrs. Joyner had Cafeteria duty this morning. I went down in the Cafeteria and helped her with all the kids. The students were excited to see me down there. It was like they didn’t know I could be anywhere else but the class room. After we got all the students feed and leaving the cafeteria, we finally made it back to the room. They once again chose their lunch and started on their morning work. After that I went around and checked their reading logs and gave them ram bucks if they did it. Mrs. Joyner also gave them a special prize out the treasure box if they did their reading log. After that the kids went over their morning work and it was time for them to go to library. We they went to the library the librarian told me there was nothing for me to do, so I went back and helped Mrs. Joyner. Mrs. Joyner had me staple head bands together for Friday when they are going to dress as Indians for their thanksgiving meal. After that I stapled graded tests together to send home to the parents. After doing these things for Mrs. Joyner and the children it was time for me to leave. I did however get to say goodbye to the kids before I left!

  3. Today in my placement I gave Mrs. Peake questions for the students to help them on their reflection portion of their book club. I gave them these questions to get their mind thinking in the way of reflecting on the book without including facts about the book. Mrs. Kahler asked me, Katie and Breanna to work on a bulletin board for the eighth grade hallway. Mrs. Peake said that it would be a lot of help if I would go work on the bulletin board, so I did. During class Mrs. Peake said that she was going to go through a check list for the students to make sure they make an A on their summaries. She told me it would be a laid back day for me because she was going to be going over the requirement for their summaries. North Central Middle School is a “school to watch” and they are having people come and observe them. They want to the school to be filled with students work and so that’s why we worked on the bulletin board. Everyone who saw it said the bulletin board looked fabulous! We are also not allowed to go to our placement because they are being observed tomorrow.

  4. When I arrived today the students that sat at the green table were sitting in a small circle with Mrs. Gandy playing with the baby ducks. I sat down and kind of watched them play. Soon enough Mrs. Gandy called all the tables one at the time over to play with the ducklings. When they were told to put the ducklings up, they did so very gently. I was proud of them for being so sweet with the animals. A few of the students had approached me with problems spelling words, when some asked Mrs. Gandy she told them to try and sound it out. The full moon last night must have messed with them because they would not listen. Five or six other students came up and asked me how to spell words and few went up to Mrs. Gandy. I just told the kids exactly what she had told them earlier. After they finished with the drawing and writing, the kids were called over to the rug. They did sound cards which are just cards with the letters and animals. When you see the letter you make the sounds. After that Mrs. Gandy started a book but I didn’t get to hear it because I had to leave.

  5. Today when I got to class we read for SSR, then took the attendance shortly after. The students have been reading a class book called “Payback Time” that they will soon be finishing and taking a test on. Mrs. Holley Instructed the class to get dressed out and return back to walk for about five minutes. After that, she told the class that they will be going outside since it had warmed up a little bit. The class had to run two tiger-trails in six minutes and thirty seconds. Tiger-trails are when the class runs up and down the steps of the stadium, run the corner of the track, run the steps of the visiting side, then finish by running the last corner of the track. Only two of the students were able to make the time, but I believe that some of the others could’ve if they pushed themselves harder. When everyone finished, we went back inside to continue the basketball unit by playing games of four on four for the remaining thirty minutes.

  6. When I entered the classroom this morning, Mrs. Kahler was frantically trying to gather things to decorate the 8th grade bulletin board with. She asked if Breanna and I could take over; Schools to Watch is observing North Central Middle School over the next two days and every teacher is attempting to make the school look as good as it possibly can. I was glad to help out because I know how hard Mrs. Kahler works. She goes above and beyond the call of an educator. Breanna and I choose our favorite infographics and vocabulary cards to put on the board. We also arranged letters and boarders to make it look nice. I really enjoyed being able to make someone’s life a little easier.

  7. Well another good day at the office, the office meaning the middle school! I opened up my day with the seventh graders like usual, and we set up all the archery equipment. Which consisted of setting up the targets, bows, and safety net. Some of the kids helped me and Coach Frye and there award was playing basketball. I couldn’t stay and play because I had to leave for my second block at the high school.
But when I came back for my sixth graders I played with Marquel, Thomas, Storm, Zack, and Erin. In both classes some kids got mad at each other, but I gave them advice and told them not to do anything. Tomorrow we begin our two day archery unit, which should be interesting because I don’t even know how to shoot and bow and arrow. I always look forward to the next day in teacher cadet, all the kids better be on their best behavior because we have special visitors coming in to observe every class. Teaching should be a lifestyle not just a profession because you have to always strive to get better!

  8. When I arrived to my placement the class was working on their morning work. Once they were finished with that, they worked on something else quietly, until Mrs. McFarland was ready to begin the day. Some of the class started reading their library books, some colored a picture for a grade, and some finished their homework that they were supposed to do over the weekend. When they finished that they went to the bathroom. I stayed in the room and organized their folders for Mrs. McFarland. When they returned Mrs. McFarland asked me if I wanted to read to them. Of course I said yes! I picked out 3 books. When I finished reading them the books it was time for sharing time. I let everybody on the rug share something. When I pointed at John Gaige, he said his dog died. I felt so sorry for him. After he said that though, it seemed like everybody else’s dog died. Once everybody shared, they went back to their seats and got out their English books. By this time it was time for me to leave.

  9. Today the students began class by taking their South Carolina Facts quiz. While they took their quiz, Mr. Leininger and I discussed the lesson that I will be teaching Friday. I will be teaching the students about the nullification crisis and he wanted to make sure I will be prepared and comfortable. When the students finished their quizzes, they read a chapter in Woods Runner. They have been reading this book for quite some time and Mr. Leininger hopes to finish it within the next week because they are going to have to start a new book. When the class finished reading their chapter for the day, they took notes on the Missouri Compromise. They are beginning their unit on the road to the Civil War. I am so excited for this unit because I will get to teach a lot of it, and I am fairly familiar with it. It is one of my favorite time periods in history. Once the students finished taking notes, they played the Oregon Trail game. The students love playing this game. All of the classes are competing to see who can make it the farthest. They played the game until it was time to switch classes. When the second period class came in, I passed out their scantron sheets for their quiz. They were just beginning their quiz as I was leaving. Today was a slow, boring day, but Friday is going to amazing!

  10. Today was just an ordinary day. When I got to Ms. Pigg's room, she was taking attendance and names for breakfast the next morning. She then collected the students' money for lunch. On Mondays I do not have to count the books for each student's 100 book challenge because they do not take books home to read on Fridays. I noticed that one of the students was absent when I gave each student a Popsicle for their hard work. I also got some one on one time with a student again. The student had to read their story for the week to me out their text book and prove to me they knew what their vocabulary words mean. They usually have about ten to twelve words. I love one on one time because I get to know that student and his or her weaknesses in different subjects. These students impress me every day with their ability to understand new concepts. When I teach I hope they understand my methods as well as Ms. Pigg's.

  11. Today my placement started with Our Time Together in the gymnasium. After 7th & 8th grade went to class the 6th graders stayed. They then received an update of what’s going on throughout the week. They were also awarded for good behavior. They then came to class, and started writing down their homework. I went around and signed agendas to make sure they wrote their homework down. The Middle School that I’m at is also a part of the schools to watch. Therefore, they were also informed that guests would be in the building tomorrow. The students’ lesson was on adding and subtracting fractions. Most of the students’ are familiar with the criteria. Therefore, they caught on pretty well. Mrs. Smith taught the lesson, and then assigned homework to wrap up the class. I believe today was easy for the students

  12. Today was definitely a Monday. I do not know what my students got into over the weekend, but they were very rowdy. Mrs. Catoe moved five clips down before we even got to Morning Meeting. Students were not following directions at all. Many students lost recess minutes by 8:15. I even had to tell some students to settle down. After we had a very loud Morning Meeting, the students completed their daily language and math exercises. They still, one by one, came back to my table to work on their page for the class book. After the math and language, Mrs. Catoe gave them their eight spelling words for the week. They then copied them three times each and were to circle the one which was written the neatest. I walked around and helped them with that. Before I had to leave, the students started on their plan drawing for their book. They got to draw their best place to be and got to color them. They start their final draft tomorrow!

  13. Today during class the students did their normal everyday things. They started by unpacking and putting their stuff up. Once they finished that they returned to their seats and began reading their AR books. I would take a student at a time to the back table and read with them. When each student was finished reading they wrote down the book and went to the computer lab to take their AR tests. I would write my initials by the book once they showed me the grade they got when they took the quiz online. When everybody was done in the computer lab we went back to class where the kids were told to get their math books. They were going to be doing some warm up exercises and then finishing with a new lesson. When everything was done with that the kids were given their new vocabulary for the week to cut out. I walked around the class and helped the kids group the words. If someone needed help cutting I would also help them cut. Once the kids were done cutting all the words out it was time for me to go. - Christian
