  2. It feels like it has been forever since I have been to my placement. I was very glad to be back though! They started out with a warm up, which was only about four questions. They got through it pretty quickly, and while they were doing that I passed out papers that Mrs. Mathis had graded. After they finished Mrs. Mathis went over it. Then she assigned them work and they got to work on it for the rest of the class. While they were working on their work, Mrs. Mathis put up Channel One to keep them from talking. I thought this was very smart because it did keep them from talking. I thought it was really cool. Also, I got to help them with their work. I had to use a calculator because I was so nervous I would tell them the wrong answer. I always get nervous that I am going to tell them the wrong answer. What if they are getting graded on something I am helping them with, and they get it wrong. Then it would be my fault they made a bad grade. It scares me, but I love helping them. I just hope that I don’t tell anyone the wrong answer. Also, they don’t get to use a calculator. This troubles me because I am so use to using a calculator, and I don’t understand how they do it without a calculator. Then after that class left I helped start the next class. They began their warm up, and I took up their homework. I graded it and passed it back out. Then I left, after passing back out their papers.

  3. Today I got to my placement a few minutes late, but it was okay because they hadn’t even started the morning news show yet. I got in the classroom and they began the morning news for the school. Then they watched Channel One News. Mrs. Peake then went to explained what they were going to do today. She told them they are going to type up their Book Clubs and print them out. While I was gone they began working on write letters to someone they are thankful for and they also had to finish writing those. Then they were to work on their password activities if they go the chance. Mrs. Peake was swamped with papers and there wasn’t much else for me to so do so I asked if she wanted me to grade anything. She asked me to grade two work sheets for her. There are so many students that she has to teach and that means there are so many papers. I graded a work sheet on sentences and past and present tense. I really do enjoy grading papers so I didn’t mind doing it for her at all.

  4. Today started out as it always does. I organized the students 100 book challenge folders and marked them for the books they took home. Then, I read with a student. This was the same student I read with on Monday. I noticed it was a lot easier for him to read the text this time. Also, I noticed he was using the “sound it out” method that I told him I used when I started reading. It made me feel like I actually helped him and was effective in his reading skills. It took half the time for him to read the same story as it did on Monday. I was so proud of him! Then, I got to take a trip to the library with them. They were so excited to get new books. I wish adults minds still thought as simple as a child’s mind does. Then, they walked back to class to begin a Math test and I had to leave.

  5. Today in my placement we did our normal routine of checking homework, and signing agendas. Afterwards, Mrs. Smith passed out a study guide for the students’ tests tomorrow. The test will be on adding and subtracting fractions. They have been working on this lesson all week, and most still seem lost. The material wasn’t too difficult; however; I didn’t expect them to do well on it. I’m not sure why the students struggle so much, but it bothers me. There happens to be a few students who do well in the class. Mrs. Smith let the students use white boards today. She would give them problems to do, ask to see their answer, and then discuss it. She also worked out the problems on the board. Then the classes changed, and the next group of students came in.

  6. Today was so chaotic. When I got to the class, Mrs. Catoe asked me to put together even more things for the Thanksgiving activities. It took me a very long time and I was still working on it by the time Morning Meeting began. After Morning Meeting, the students started their daily language and mathematics worksheets. However, Mrs. Catoe did not run enough copies. She had to leave the classroom to go make some more. I was left in the room alone with 22 rambunctious second graders. I had to repeatedly tell them to stop talking and I almost moved some clips for not following directions. Mrs. Catoe came back and they finished their warm-ups. Then, they started their daily spelling activity. While they were working, Mrs. Catoe and I looked up lesson ideas for my lesson next week. We found a cute lesson on Pinterest that goes along with “Stone Soup.” She then had to leave the class again to print the lesson out. Again, the students would not listen to me. She left once more before my time in the class was up. It was very stressful for me to deal with the students by myself.

  8. Today was my first day back to placement after being away for two days. It was not a good day back because Mr. Leininger was not there today, so I had a sub. It was kind of boring. Mrs. Lyon was his sub for the day, so I assisted her with the activities he left for the class. I went over the South Carolina Facts with the students at the beginning of the class. Then the class read a chapter in Woods Runner. After they finished reading, the students got to watch a video. The video was actually very interesting. It was about a few slaves who lived on a plantation and how they became free due to the Underground Railroad. The students seemed to really enjoy the video as well. After the video, it was time for the classes to change. When the second class came in, I went over the South Carolina Facts with them before I left. Today was a bad day, but tomorrow I get to teach which I am really excited about. I am a little nervous because I did not get to talk to Mr. Leininger about what I need to make sure and cover, but I hope I do a really good job. I am excited and hope the students enjoy my lesson tomorrow.

  9. Today when I arrived to my placement 3 students from the class was in speech. Mrs. McFarland wanted me to finished folding the Relay for Life drawing, while she finished with the 100 book challenge. One of the students, Daniel was finished with his work and Mrs. McFarland told him to read his science book. He kept coming to Mrs. McFarland and asking her what each word was. I noticed she started to get frustrated and she then asked me to take him to the other room and help him read it. I was very excited when she told me this because I love working one on one with the students. I noticed while I was reading with Daniel, he wouldn’t even try attempting to sound out the words he didn’t know. He would just skip over them. He started to get mad at me because I would stop him and make him sound it out. After a while he kept saying “I don’t know”. He might be a trouble maker in class, but I knew he was smart. I had to keep encouraging him so he could finish. Once we were done reading, he was smiling and thanked me. Mrs. McFarland and I then took the class to the restroom and allowed them to get some water. When we returned to the classroom Mrs. McFarland started reading to the class and then it was time for me to leave.

  10. Upon arriving at my placement the kids were cutting out pictures of different amounts of acorns. They had to glue those pictures to pictures of squirrels with the corresponding number. Only two of them messed on of them up. All they did was put four and three in the wrong spot. I think they were looking at someone’s paper across from them and mirrored those pictures. Those young kids don’t understand the mirror image thing about it being backwards. After Mrs. Gandy and I checked the class’s paper, Mrs. Gandy started on the calendar. They went through that without a hitch. As is normal, after the calendar, they went to the rug and danced to “Silly Willie”. They danced around just like the cd told them. When the song went off they all sat on their spots and Mrs. Gandy read them a story. She read them “Run Turkey, Run”. It was a nice little story about a farmyard turkey that ran away to the woods in order to escape the farmer on thanksgiving. They enjoyed the story and went to their groups once it was over. It was a good group time. They were well behaved.

  11. Today when I got to class I greeted the students and they sat in the bleachers and waited for SSR to begin. After the reading, our class had to grab some chairs that had been set up for the basketball game that took place, and take them to the old auditorium. When we got back the class stretched as a whole, and finished with fifteen push-ups and sit-ups, then a minute of mountain-climbers. For the rest of class the students got to have the “day off” and were allowed to play basketball, volleyball, or could throw the football. Today was a pretty great day for the students considering they didn’t have to any exercise routines and could play for most of the class time.

  12. I was finally able to go back to my placement after two days off, thanks to the visitors at the middle school. I missed my kids, I didn’t think I would but I actually did. In first block the kids were still on their archery unit, so they were shooting arrows at the targets. I was a little nervous because I had no idea about shooting arrows. But later on in fourth block with the sixth graders, I actually tried and let’s just say it wasn’t all that pretty.
One of my first tries hit the ground, and Joseph (one of my kids) felt sorry for me and came over to show me how to shoot. All the kids laughed at me, but I knew they were just joking around. After that class left, I challenged Coach Fry to a bow and arrow competition. But we couldn’t do it because the next class came in, and when I went to hold the door Thomas (one of my favorite students) asked me where I had been. I was shocked he would even ask, because I thought these kids didn’t care that much about me. My first day back really showed me what a special thing I’m doing with these kids and the impact I am trying to make in their lives.

  13. Today during Mrs. Mason’s 3rd block class the kids had a couple of tests they had to take. Before we got to the tests we read silently for a little while. Once all the kids had settled down we went to the computer lab where we took our morning AR tests. Once every student had completed the tests they had to take we returned back to the classroom. Once the students had been seated Mrs. Mason gave them their first test which was the Explorer’s Test. It asked the students what they had learned in history. Once every student had finished the test we gave them a couple of more minutes to look over and make sure they answered every question. We then gave out their math tests. Mrs. Mason read over all the questions while I walked around the room and helped any kids having trouble understanding the question. The kids were told to take a break from the math quiz and were brought to sit in front of the board. They were learning about new words in their vocabulary. They were going over new sounds such as the ‘al’ and ‘aw’ sounds. I sat silently and watched as Mrs. Mason went over these and the kids sat silently and raised their hands when they had a question. I had to go before she could finish the lesson. - Christian
