Placement Day Eight (November 11)

  1. My students were being very sassy today. Maybe it is because it is Monday, I don't know. We got into class a little late because the students had a little Veterans Day assembly. So the class already started out crazy. They had a five question warm up that took them atleast 20 minutes to complete. Now in middle school this is already half of the class. After going over the warm up, Mrs. Mathis began to teach the new lesson. The kids were being hard headed and acting like they didn't know anything. Mrs. Mathis was getting very frustrated. She only got to do like three problems. After that class left, her Algebra 1 class came in. Her second class is extra sassy. There is one boy who always complains and it really bothers me. They slam their books down and constantly complain. Mrs. Mathis asked me to grade some papers, and after that I left for the day. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

  2. It’s Veterans Day! Arriving at Mt. Pisgah I saw a lot of cars parked all over. I couldn’t remember why at first but then I got it. They had a program today. Everyone was wearing their red, white, and blue. Luckily I wore a blue shirt today. Mrs. Gandy asked the class to draw a picture and write what they think the program would be like. Their pictures are really interesting: purple people, green skies, orange trees. They did their calendars and Mrs. Gandy announced she had to tell them something very important. She told them that they were going to be handing out flags and notes to all the veterans that came. She also said for them to be sure to tell them “thank you”. I was really excited and proud that my class was picked to do this. After a few more minutes they called all classes to the gym for the program. Kindergarten through second grade went up onto risers to sing some patriotic songs for the parents and grandparents present. They sang two songs very well and were extremely well behaved. Afterwards they came to sit down on the floor and Mrs. Gandy asked me to stand in the middle so I could watch them and make sure everyone was quiet. Aside from one or two small conversations they sat quiet and pretty still. Then they handed out the flags to all the veterans present. Everyone seemed touched and happy to see patriotism present in such small children. It was a great day!

  3. Today we began class a little differently. Instead of taking their SC Facts quiz, the students had to read a chapter in Woods Runner. It is a book they have been reading little by little because it related to their American Revolution standards. Mr. Leininger just wants to be finished with it already because they have moved on from that standard, but they still have a few chapters to read. He hopes to have the book finished by the end of the week. He led the reading with first period and I lead it with second period. After the students read a chapter, they began taking notes. They are starting learning about the War of 1812. I am learning about it as well. I love that I am learning while they are. Mr. Leininger makes even the most boring notes interesting and I envy that. I hope to be able to teach my lessons as well as he does. He said that I should began my teaching soon and should expect to teach anywhere from five to seven lessons. I cannot wait until we get into the time periods that I know a lot about, so that I can begin to teach. I love history and hope I will be able to make the students passionate about it too.

  4. I had the seventh grades first today like usual and they started off with the everyday routine which consists of dressing out and running. After they were done running we gathered them up in a circle and Coach Frye talked about Black Hawk Down which was a military operation. He did this because it was Veteran’s Day today and after they got done, they played the game name Black Hawk Down. Which consisted of everybody but four kids got around a taped off circle and through whiffle balls at 4 kids, who were trying to protect their two cones which represented the two pilots of the Black Hawk helicopters. The kids had a blast and I almost got hit by the balls a lot because I would have to get the balls they thrown because they could not go within the taped circle.
After I came back from the high school for my six graders, they were also playing the game Black Hawk Down. I got in the butt by one kid on accident because I was trying to get balls for the kids. But I didn’t get mad because he didn’t mean too and that kid had an arm! The next class was the same but they ran two laps outside instead of inside. Me and Coach Frye throwed the football while they were running. Then when they came back in, they played Black Hawk Down and my work was done for the day.

  5. When I walked into my placement this morning, dreading having to come back to school after a long weekend, the kids immediately put a smile on my face. I didn't even shut my car door behind me before I heard "Good morning, Ms. Megan!" I didn't realize how much I missed them when I was absent last week. These kids are so smart, and I can see them improving with something new each day. The students were working on their math workbooks when I walked in. They are so well-behaved and look up to me a lot. I remember helpers coming into my elementary classes and I loved it. I plan to get more involved with the kids soon. Trevor makes sure he tells me a story every day and today his story was about how he came to visit me at the funeral home over the weekend. After hearing Trevor's story, I called spelling words out to Mirage for her make-up spelling test. As soon as we got done making up her spelling test from Friday, they went to take their testing for the gifted and talented program called SEAGUL. I really enjoyed today and look forward to hearing more stories from the kids tomorrow.

  6. Today on this lovely Monday the entire school met in the gym for their routine, “Our Time Together.” (OTT) The principal informs the students of what’s going to happen during the week, along with monthly events. The sixth graders stay after other grades leave. This is when the sixth grade teachers tell the students who they have for the discipline list. They also award students, with little to no discipline problems. After all of this is over the students are walked to class. After arriving to the class, I began signing agendas, and handing back test. Immediately after I did that Mrs. Smith began a new lesson. The lesson was all about graphs. The students are used to the normal all positive graphs. Although, most weren’t very familiar with the four quadrant graph. Mrs. Smith showed, and labeled each quadrant of the graph. Then handed the students a graph to do as a class. The graph was also to be completed as their homework. The students will be working on four quadrant graphs for the rest of the week. Also their test will simply be to graph a picture. I look forward to seeing how well the students perform. I don’t believe this will be any trouble for them. - Ben

  7. We started the week in Mrs. Kahler’s class off by completing the assignment from Friday. The students rushed to put the finishing touches on their infographics as Mrs. Kahler, Madison, and I walked around and helped with any issues that the groups had. After everyone had finished, the groups began to present their projects. I sat at the front of the room and adjusted the document cam so that the class could see each group’s finished infographic. I could clearly see which students were natural public speakers and which ones struggle with speaking in front of others. I could also see which members of the group contributed the most information and work. If I were grading the assignment, I would take this into consideration. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kahler’s responses to the presentations. She gave each group specific constructive criticism without tearing down the self-esteem of her students. I hope to gain this skill as I continue in my placement.

  8. During Teacher Cadet today I read with some of the students. I first read with Jermaine, then I read with Camron. Once finished with them I read with David until we were finished with his books. After I read with everyone that needed help we went to the computer lab to take our AR tests. Camron needed help on some of his questions so I would read him the question and the answer choices and let him pick the correct answer. Once everyone had finished I recorded their score and we returned back to class. The kids then got in front of the board and Mrs. Mason talked about their newest assignment which was a persuasion letter about why people should eat something other than turkey on Thanksgiving. Once the kids finished brainstorming they returned back to their seat where Mrs. Mason and I helped any of the kids that needed help. I went around the class and helped kids spell out words and explain what they had to do until I had to leave. - Christian

  9. Today was definitely a Monday. Everyone was groggy and slow, including myself. In Mrs. Kahler’s class, the students were to finish their infographics and begin presentations. Katie was in charge of handling the document camera for the students. We had fun with that later on after class. Anyway, some groups did very well on their presentations. Others however, struggled. One group had fabulous voices and graphics for their presentation. I actually enjoyed watching and listening to their presentation. Another group did not do as well. They had false facts on their project. Also, it was evident that they did not do their best on the physical appearance of the info graphic. Their voices were low and mumbled. It was horrible to watch. Mrs. Kahler handled it very well. She told them what they did wrong and was very assertive with her words. Yet another thing to put on my list of things I have learned from her!

  10. Today in my placement was an off day. When I got there Mrs. McFarland gave me worksheets to put together for the kids. While I was working on that there were some kids who had money to go to the book fair. Mrs. McFarland asked me if I would take them. As I looked around at the items they had at the book fair, I started to laugh at myself because I spent so much time and so much money on junk they had at book fairs when I was in elementary school. Now here I was standing here watching kids doing the same thing I did when I was there age. When I returned I finished putting the packets together. When I finished that I took the class to the restroom. By the time they finished using the bathroom it was time for me to leave.

  11. Today when I got to class I greeted the students and waited for SSR to begin. After reading, I took the attendance then Mrs. Holley told the class what was going to happen this week. For the next five weeks the class will have to attend a reproductive health class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The students who don’t have to take the class or choose not to will remain in the gym to do their regular exercises and activities. I’m going to remain in the gym with the students who aren’t taking the class along with the JROTC. Mrs. Holley took up some of the forms from the class and told them to dress out. When they returned the class ran some agilities on the ladders and box jumps for about thirty minutes. After that, they were allowed to play for the rest of the block.

  12. Today was Veterans Day and the children had a program. When I first arrived I talked to Mrs. Joyner like normal until the kids arrived. When the kids arrived they had a Veteran Day sheet they had to color until it was time for the program. While they were coloring Mrs. Joyner discussed with them how they were to act in the program and she went over what they were supposed to do. She also reviewed the songs with them that they were supposed to sing. They then called for us to go to the gym. The kids were very excited and it was hard to get them to calm down, but they finally did. Kindergarten through 2nd grade were first to go up. They sang so well and it made my heart melt. When they were done they were grinning from ear to ear and they took a seat while the rest of the ceremony took place. When the ceremony was done they greeted their parents with pride. After that we returned to class and I gave them all a high five for doing such a great job.

  13. Today I got to school somewhat early. The students weren’t in the classroom yet, but Mrs. Peake was. She asked me the previous week to prepare a lesson to teach the students on book clubs. She asked me to have it ready for tomorrow. I got there early to make sure I had everything I would need. She was so helpful and gave me examples of what I would need for me lesson to go well. We brainstormed on grabbers and hook. We came up with using a movie trailer to show what a summary should be like. The students got to class and I took attendance. They also watched Channel One News. Mrs. Peake gave them an assignment on passwords that were in the book. These passwords are how you could watch the videos online. The student had to research what they meant and how they were connected to each other. Mrs. Peake told me she also made this for any students who finished my assignment early. This way none of them would be sitting around. She explained to me this was something she had to learn to do the hard way her first year of teaching and she didn’t what that to happen to me. I’m so thankful she did that for me!
