College Day (November 15)

  1. Today I was unable to go to my placement due to college day at Columbia College. It was an okay day, but I would never ever go to Columbia College. It is an all girls school, and I hated it. The buildings smelt funny, and were not very clean. Also it was extremely hot in there. One thing that I thought was really cool, was that the washing machines and dryers were able to text you when your laundry was done. Also, the food was okay. It wasn't the best food I have seen at colleges, but it was okay. I visited a class on education, and it was okay. The classes are only 50 minutes long, which is much better than the hour and a half that I am use to. Overall it was an okay day, but I will not be attending Columbia College.

  2. Today was college day at Columbia College! All the teacher cadets from NC, Camden and DutchFort met at Columbia College and participated in College Day. When we arrived we had registration and then we moved to a different building and there we learned about the different changes in education. We did some group activities which got us to interact with students we did not know and meet new people which was really awesome. After that we spilt into groups. We could pick a leadership class or student life class. I went to the leadership one and we learned about how to shake hands and what our strengths were. After that we went to the college class we were assigned and I went to psychology. In psychology I learned about drugs and depression. We learned how they effected people and what to do. Following that it was lunch time and the food was really good! After lunch we took a campus tour and it was really fun. I loved how health and fitness was promoted on campus. After the tour we had a closing meeting where we learned what to pack for college and we had books read to us. After that we took pictures and we went on our way back to the school. Overall it was a really nice day at Columbia College!

  3. Today our Teacher Cadet spent the day at Columbia College for College Day. We went and picked up the Teacher Cadet class from Camden High School. We began the day by going and getting our schedules for the day and name tags. We then moved into a different building, and the President of the school came and spoke to us about how excited she was to have us on campus. Then a woman from CERRA came and spoke to us about having what it takes to be a teacher. We played activities that showed us how teachers have to be able to adapt and adjust. After that we got to go to a leader ship seminar. We learned how to be professional and be confident when we go into an interview. After that we got to go and sit in on a college class. I sat in on a communications class that was required by the college that all students take it. After the class, we all went to lunch. The food there was awesome! Once lunch was over, we got a tour of the college. We got to tour the facilities and dorms. We ended our tour by getting t-shirts and our college day was over and we went home.

  4. Today we went to Columbia College. I was pretty hesitant to go just because it is an all-girls college. Once we got there we walked up the five thousand steps that were outside and entered into a conference type room just to be told we had to go to a different room. In that different room we watched a very interesting video. It was about how technology is forever changing and improving. I really enjoyed the video. After the video we were given a number (I was a 1) and told us to find a partner we didn’t know. I got a girl from Dutch Fork, I can’t remember her name. When we got with our partner they told us to face them and look them up and down (talk about awkward). Next we were told to turn our backs and change five things on ourselves, then they told us to do it again. It was really difficult but funny. We were sent to corners to write our names in a crossword on a big sheet of paper. After they sent us to our classes or program. I was sent to BIO 100. It was really boring and all they did was talk a little and show videos. I was nice that it was only fifty minutes. We were pulled from our class and sent to a student life program. It told us about living on Columbia College’s campus. After we finally got to eat in the cafeteria. Then we went on a tour of the campus. The dorms were small. We went back to the conference room and did a game. Then we were sent outside to the steps and took some pictures. After we went home. It was an okay day.

  5. Today I had the chance to go to College Day at Columbia College. At first I didn’t know what to expect and had no clue about what was going to take place. When we first got there I was surprised on how nice the campus looked; from what I heard Columbia College was in a bad part of town, but it was surprisingly nice. I really enjoyed the first video we watched that was titled “Did you know?” because it made me realize how fast the world is moving around us without us even noticing it at times. Also, I thought that the first impression lesson we had was pretty interesting. There were some things that you would overlook like keeping eye contact while giving a firm handshake on a regular basis. Overall, I had thought that it was a pretty fun experience. This was my first time touring an actual college campus and sitting in a college class, even if it was an all-girl school. I’m glad that Teacher Cadet gave me the opportunity to partake in College Day

  6. Instead of attending placement, today, the rest of the teacher cadet class and I toured Columbia College. The campus was much nicer than I had expected and I was incredibly impressed with the faculty. In the first seminar, we learned what the best strategies are for making a great first impression. I have never thought so deeply about the simple act of a handshake, but I am thankful that I can now be conscious of this action when interviewing for a job. I also really enjoyed the class that I attended. The professor seemed a little off, but the subject matter was incredibly interesting. We learned about the theology behind Les Miserables. This is one of my favorite films, so I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. Lunch was enjoyable and our tour leader was incredibly nice. Although I was impressed with the college, I do not think that it is the place for me.

  7. Today was a little different because instead of going to my placement, I went with my teacher cadet class to Columbia College to spend the day there. We got there in the morning and all the school which was North Central, Camden, and Dutchfork all meet in the conference room to get their schedules. We first all went to another room across the campus for our first meeting which was basically about teacher cadet. It was very interesting because we opened up with a video about random facts, such as China has more honor students than we have students. After the video we did this game when we split up and had a partner we had to meet, which was awkward but I had a nice girl from Dutchfork as my partner.
I then went on my own schedule which my first class was Learning and Development class. We did this little auction thing and this puzzle worksheet was very confusing and challenging. Then we went back into the conference room and had a connections lesson. I also meet some friends, and afterwards we all went to eat the best cafeteria food I have ever meet! After lunch we took a tour of the campus which consisted of looking at the athletic facilities, which was my favorite part. They have a very up to date weight room, and they take pride in their athletics. After another meeting just talking about college life we packed up and took a group picture and left! Columbia College was an interesting experience because it gave me look in college life, Go Koalas!

  9. Today instead of going to our placements, we went to Columbia College. Camden and Dutch Fork teacher cadets were also there. We first went to hear a lady from CERRA. She told us to get with a partner that we didn't know. I picked a girl from Dutch Fork named Ashton. She was really nice and we continued to talk off and on throughout the whole day. The lady from CERRA taught us about making great impressions and how we can change ourselves with an activity we did. Once we were finished with that seminar, Megan and I went to room where they told us about the student life at Columbia College. After that I went to theology. We watched a certain part of Les Miserables and then had a discussion about the religion in it. I found the conversation interesting. After that we went to lunch, which was awesome. The tour after that was okay. I loved how the campus was set up, but I do not think this college would work for me.

  10. Today instead of going to our placement, all of the teacher cadets went to College Day at Columbia College. Camden High School went with us, and Dutch Fork High School was also there. We began our day with a presentation on why we should become teachers. We were then tested to see if we had what it took to become a teacher by participating in an activity. We had to partner with someone we did not know, so I partnered with a boy named Joshua from Dutch Fork. We had to change things about our appearance and see if the other noticed. After that activity, we wrote our names on a paper and turned it into a crossword puzzle. Then we were all dismissed to go to our own scheduled activities. I went to a communications class led by Dr. Ford. She was an amazing teacher and I thoroughly enjoyed her class. She was teaching interview skills. It was engaging, interesting, and educational. I look forward to taking similar classes in college. Then I went to a leadership seminar. The women taught the group about the importance of first impressions, knowing yourself, and networking. It was a great experience and I learned a lot from it. Next, I went to lunch. The food was amazing! After lunch, I toured the campus. The campus was nice, but I could not see myself going there. After the tour, we learned about what to take and what not to take to college. We also learned about what professors will expect from us. We then took our group pictures and departed. I learned a lot about what to expect from and at college. It made me even more excited to start my journey to college and to see where it will take me.

  11. Instead of going to our placements today, the whole teacher cadet class went to Columbia College. Upon arrival we received a doughnut as a snack. We started off our day with a group activity involving other teacher cadet classes. We also watched video filled with interesting statistics. Afterwards, everyone separated into groups to go to different classes. I went to Human Growth & Development. The class was very small, only holding around 10 students. The class seemed to be very laid back, and peaceful. One interesting part of this day was lunch. The cafeteria was very large, and enjoyable for me. They had several different varieties of food to choose from. After lunch we went on a tour of the whole campus, then all met together for a college packing lesson. After this we all went outside to take pictures. I enjoyed the college day, and would love to tour other colleges. It was a good experience for me.

  12. Today none of us went to our placements. Instead, we and the Camden and Dutch Fork Teacher Cadets went to College Day at Columbia College. At first, I was not very excited because we had to get up early and I am not interested in that particular college. However, when we got there and began, I started to enjoy myself. We did an activity that challenged ourselves and brought us together as a group. Then, we watched a video and learned crazy facts about the innovation of technology. I was learning a lot. Then, we went to a leadership seminar. We talked about being professional and even analyzed the details of a handshake. We then went to our individual classes. I went to a grammar class and met the professor, Dr. Tuten. She was fabulous! I would seriously love to be in her class all day. I learned so much in an hour! They were all welcoming, too. After lunch, we got to go on a tour. This was my least favorite part because I did not like the campus at all. However, I learned a lot about dorm rooms, curfew, and campus rules in general. Overall, it was an okay day. I learned a lot and I got to miss school!

  13. College Day was very interesting. I already knew I was not planning to attend college there but they still had a lot of fun activities for us to do. To start out, I was dreading it because I am not going into the education field. But when I got there I learned I could use teaching skills in everyday life. I was put in Dr. Tuten’s Grammar class for fifty minutes. It was better than I expected. She was really nice and she must know I like to write a lot because she gave us pens. When we went to lunch, I ate so much! The food was great! I had chicken, fries, cherry coke and ice cream for dessert. It was good but I can see where the college food could get old. I am glad I am living at home rather than college because I am an only child and sharing a room might turn into a problem.

  14. Today we had college day. Once all the cadets finally got to the school we loaded onto the bus. Once everyone got on the bus we picked up the Camden Teacher Cadets. Then we all headed to Columbia College for the tour of the campus. Once we arrived we were greeted by the Colombia College tour guides. They showed us where to be seated and then we were explained how today was going to go. We were going to be broken up into groups and took on tours of the campus. Once everyone was in their groups the tour began. We started with where the students lived on campus, then we moved onto what their usual routines were. There was much to do including gyms, a swimming pool, lounges where you can relax, also a church and many other things. Once 12 o’clock arrived we were taken to the lunch room. There was a lot of food you can pick from with your food pass. Once everyone had eaten we began the tour where we left off. Once the tour had ended we were taken to the room where we started the tour where we were told what to bring and what not to bring to the campus. Once they finished this speech we were given items for coming including a clipboard for the girls and Frisbees for the boys. We then loaded back on the bus, dropped the Camden kids off back at Camden High and then returned to North Central. - Christian
