Placement Day Nine (November 12)

  1. Today in Mrs. Mathis's class the students worked on a worksheet. At first they did their warm up and they went over it as a class. Then Mrs. Mathis took it up for a participation grade. Some students don't do the warm up and it makes me angry because it's a free grade. Mrs. Mathis went over every single problem, there was no way for them to get anything less than a hundred. Then after they finished the warm up, they went over the homework from the previous night. It was pretty easy. They then started doing their classwork. Mrs. Mathis takes these up and checks them right for wrong. Some students really don't care. As they worked on their class work I sorted through a million papers to find my first block kids papers. The grades weren't too well. Mrs. Mathis told them that they could make up anything that they didn't have a good grade on. This shocked me. There is no way that they can't make a hundred in that class. It bothers me how much they don't care at all.

  2. Today was the least interesting day I have had yet. I walked in, and as always, I got smiles and hugs. I’m so glad today is their last day of testing for the SEAGUL program. As I walked in, I knew exactly what to start on. I started counting their books in the bags they take home every night. They have a 100 book challenge they work on all year. A lot of improvement is noticed in these children with their reading skills. There are different levels for them to reach and for second grade, white is the highest level. It is a fourth grade level and only one student in Ms. Pigg’s class is at this stage. I have missed these kids while they have been testing. I know they all did so well. I tend to notice when kids are not there. Tomorrow I am doing popsicles for birthdays this week. There were two and one is tomorrow. I look forward to surprising them because they are so grateful and appreciative when I bring them things.

  3. Today in class, my seventh graders worked on their health projects from last week about the topics they were assigned. First block was chill, but one kid kept asking me questions which was fine because he is pretty cool. When I came back for my six graders, my first block were completing a personal hygiene worksheet. After they were done, everybody was allowed to play basketball or volleyball. Coach Greenway cut off the lights which means that all playing must stop, so the kids put the balls down and went to dress back out.
Coach Greenway then let them go and I held the door for the next class. This little girl named Taylor Thompson was like “hey Coach Sims”, which made me smile because she remembered my name and respects me. This class did the same worksheet but I read it out loud to them and did the questions with them, they were all very attentive and quiet. After that I released them to go play and then when the lights were turned off again I put up all the balls and I was on my way home.

  4. During Teacher Cadet today I read with some of the students. I first read with Jermaine, then I read with Camron. Once finished with them I read with David until we were finished with his books. After I read with everyone that needed help we went to the computer lab to take our AR tests. Camron needed help on some of his questions so I would read him the question and the answer choices and let him pick the correct answer. Once everyone had finished I recorded their score and we returned back to class. The kids then got in front of the board and Mrs. Mason talked about their newest assignment which was a persuasion letter about why people should eat something other than turkey on Thanksgiving. Once the kids finished brainstorming they returned back to their seat where Mrs. Mason and I helped any of the kids that needed help. I went around the class and helped kids spell out words and explain what they had to do until I had to leave. - Christian

  5. Today was my last day in Mrs. Kahler’s class. The students continued with their presentations all class period. Just like yesterday, some did very well. Loud voices and attractive presentations are key. Also, other groups did not do so well. They mumbled and slacked on their projects. Mrs. Kahler was ever so patient with them, though. When they finished their presentations, they began their Edgar Allan Poe unit. I LOVED this unit as a middle schooler! I was so upset I would not get to stay while they learned about this. They got a packet that they had to annotate over the weekend. They answered questions on that. Then they began to watch a video biography on Poe. It was a very dark film and it was very informative. I remember watching it when I was in that class. I think the students really enjoyed it.

  6. Upon arrival at my placement today, we went through the typical morning routines. I checked homework, and signed agendas. Mrs. Smith then handed the students four quadrant graphs. This assignment was their classwork along with their homework. Most students were able to do the assignment without problems. This was shocking to me considering the lesson was only given during one day, and over a short period of time. However there was one individual who seemed as if they were completely lost. I did my best to help them understand. Although, they had a very poor attitude. It seemed as if the problem wasn’t that they didn’t know how, but they weren’t trying. The student couldn’t even demonstrate the work of a 1st grader. They simply said the whole time they didn’t know, and that answer was repetitive to everything. Yet, this student could do one quadrant graphs efficiently. It really frustrated me, because I thought I couldn’t help them understand. However, the whole time, it was there lack of effort that I couldn’t help. - Ben

  7. Today was Tuesday which is, by my own assumption, library day. Although first I walked in and found them working on a small worksheet that was supposed to help with counting. They just counted the pictures and colored in the number of boxes. Mrs. Gandy told me to walk around and checked to make sure the kindergarteners all had the correct answers. I finished and Mrs. Gandy told the class they were going to the library. She told the kids who the leader was, lined them up, and walked them next door to the library. I decided this time that I needed to stay with Mrs. Gandy to figure out my lesson plan. We went back to the classroom and for the first time I had ever witnessed it that quiet. Mrs. Gandy gave me the standards and I looked through them and found some that had good potential for lessons. I came up with a few ideas that I liked and told Mrs. Gandy. She said that they were good so I went forward with my planning. After I got, what I thought was, some good plans done I thought about my gift to Mrs. Gandy, and since it is going to be food, I asked about allergies. She said there was only one. Right after the kids came in, but I had to leave. I would say it was a productive day.

  8. As we all saw either on their way to school or at home, it snowed last night. Not only was their snow on the ground, Mrs. Gandy brought the ducklings to school. Needless to say it was a very excited kindergarten classroom. I walked in and she had one duckling out and was showing him to the class. The children were nothing less than amazed. I guess that’s the first time they are around a new life like that and completely aware of what’s going on. Then after she put the ducks back in their cage, she told the kids that they were going outside to play in the snow. The kids let out a scream of excitement and lined up to go outside. They played and I got some good pictures. After they came back in and went to their groups I got my usual group and they did very well for me. It was a great day.

  9. Today when I arrived to my placement Mrs. McFarland had work for me to put together. After I finished that I took the class to the restroom. I love taking the class to the restroom because it helps Mrs. McFarland out and it proves that I can handle the class. Today was just not my day to take these kids to the restroom. You have girls who don’t wash their hands, people who shoves each other in line, and then you have one little boy who wants to be in control of everything! I just don’t know what had got into the class today! I guess you can say they were rambunctious. After I took the class back to the room, it was time for them to read. Before they were seated on the rug, a lady came in to observe the class. I couldn’t do much then so I sat at Mrs. McFarland’s desk and observed the class while they sat quietly and read. When it was time to leave all the kids didn’t want me to leave. I hate leaving when they don’t want me to leave, but I always tell them they’ll see me tomorrow!

  10. Today, as usual, I began class by going over the South Carolina Facts with the students. I did not really like doing this at first, but now I really enjoy it. After they finished their facts, the students took notes. They are still learning about the War of 1812. I am even learning about the War of 1812. I love that I am learning right along with them when it comes to some topics. Mr. Leininger is an amazing teacher and I love getting to see him teach every day. Once the students finished their notes, they began watching a video. The video tells the story of the Donnar Party that headed out west. They did not get a chance to finish the video before class was over, so they will finish it later this week. When the second class came in, I went over the South Carolina Facts with them too. Mr. Leininger loves that I do this, so he does not have to. After I finished discussing the facts with the students I left. I am starting to feel more comfortable presenting the facts to them and just being around the students in general. Also, Mr. Leininger does not intimidate me as much anymore. He is encouraging and supportive. I feel at ease in my placement and feel like he was a perfect match for me because we are both sarcastic. I love that I can be myself with Mr. Leininger and his students. I cannot wait to really get into teaching the students which Mr. Leininger says I will be doing soon!!

  11. Today is the first day of the class’s reproductive health class, so after we read and took attendance most of the class went with Mrs. Holley or Coach Lowder for their lesson. I went with Colonel O’Connor and the students who didn’t have to take it to the gym. Colonel was teaching the class about slow twitch and fast twitch movements and muscles and how it improves their quickness and speed. The class then worked on their core and did a variety of different abdominal work-outs. Next, they went to the weight room. This is where they did basically a short, full body work-out. This consisted of squats, curls, lunges, quick hands, and quick feet. When they were finally done they didn’t have enough time to get basketballs, or volleyballs out, so they just had to dress back out.

  12. Today when I arrived I talked to Mrs. Joyner again until the kids came down. I asked her what all I should do my lesson on. She told me she would like for me to do it on compound words. After we talked about this Mrs. Joyner and I helped the kids come in and choose which lunch they would like that day. After that they began their morning work as I walked around and helped them or answered questions. After that I sharpened all of their pencils for them and handed them out. Following this I checked their homework and rewarded them if they did it or not. After this they had their morning meeting and I sat there with them and watched them participate. After this Mrs. Joyner asked me to read a book to the class, so I did. It was really fun to be able to read to them and they showed a lot of interest in the book. After that they had silent reading time and one girl came up and told me she wanted to read to me, so she did. After that it was time for me to go, and I waved goodbye and left.

  13. This morning, my eighth graders finished presenting their infographics from the previous day. I was super impressed with many of the presentations. Many talked with loud voices and were confident in what they were saying. They clearly displayed the information that they were given. They also did it in a way that was visually appealing. For the ones who did not do as well, Mrs. Kahler provided constructive criticism. She did not give them global praise for something that they did not deserve. She also continually reassured her students of their strongpoints. She was supportive and critical at the same time. I think that that is exactly what a teacher needs to do. If the teacher can help the student improve without destroying their self-esteem, they will be able to lead his or her own students on the right path. I hope to be type of teacher.

  14. I taught my first lesson today!! It was so much fun! I was so nervous, but my homeroom is such a great class they were awesome and they helped me out! I began the class by taking attendance and they watched Channel One News. Mrs. Peake introduced the fact that I was going to be teaching and they had to be on their very best behavior. I was soo nervous about teaching. But I got up there anyway. I began by talking about book clubs and what they were. Then I moved in to talking about movie trailers. We watched the Hunger Games Movie trailer. After it was over I explained how summaries were like movie trailers for books. I gave them a work sheet with questions on it which would allow them to write their whole summary by answering them. I had them plug in the answers using the movie trailer. After that I answered any questions they had about the lesson and then I let them work on their own on the work sheet. When the class had about 5 minutes left I had them explain to me what a summary was and why they were doing it. After that I dismissed the class. Mrs. Peake told me that the lesson went well and I felt like it did too. I’m so thankful I had such well-behaved students. They were awesome! I really really loved teaching!
