Placement Day One (October 31)

  1. Placement day one was pretty awesome. I seriously love Mrs. Mathis already. She made all the teacher cadets cookies (which tasted fantastic) for our first day! Today the students were taking a test so I couldn't interact with the students that much. Mrs. Mathis let me grade test and to check homework. The test weren't all that great. Nobody made over a 75. This kind of upset me because the students were missing the questions over pointless mistakes. They know what they are doing, but they are mixing it up. I am so ready to go over these test with them, and show them their errors. Mrs. Mathis really seems like she really likes me being in there. I feel like I am taking a lot of pressure off of her by being in her classroom. I am working on knowing everybody's name, and it is coming along fairly well. At first I was weary about doing a math class, but I am so glad I did. Math is what I am good at, and I will be able to give my knowledge of math to these 8th graders for them to carry it on as well. I am so excited for the rest of the semester.

  2. Day one of my placement was the best yet! Today is Halloween, so when I walked into my placement this morning the students were working on Halloween word search puzzles. After asking Ms. Pigg if she needed any help, I went right into helping them learn how to do a word search. If they were not done with their word search, they were working on conjunctions. I got to help some students with that as well. Then, unexpectedly, Ms. Pigg asked the class to line up to go to the cafeteria. I was not aware that today was Awards Day for the first nine weeks of the school year. Taking only thirty-five minutes, the Awards Program went great! It made me even more excited for these next few weeks when I saw the proud faces on all the parent’s faces. I am really looking forward to getting to know these kids and to make them feel like they always have a friend to talk to. I love getting their adventurous stories told to me or when they show me a book they enjoyed reading. I was nervous in the beginning, but I think the love for this class is coming naturally.

  3. Today was my first day at placement. The students were excited to see me again since this was my first day being back after being away for three days. Most of the students already know me from last year when I worked with Mrs. Stogner as a mentor. The students started their day with a South Carolina Facts quiz. After their quiz, the students took notes. They just finished their Revolutionary War unit and are now learning about how our country developed after the war. I participated in their lesson by answering questions that Mr. Leininger would ask. If they did not know the answer I would tell them the answer and explain it to them. The students took notes up until they had to switch classes. Mr. Leininger and I discussed what I would like to teach the students. He plans to get me involved right away which I am excited about. I love working with middle school age kids because I feel like I can really make a difference in their lives. He plans to email me the South Carolina Facts warm ups so I can become familiar with them and go over them with the students every day. He and I are both extremely excited about getting to work together for the next six weeks. I know I am going to have a blast working with him and his students.

  4. Today was the first day of placement and it was amazing! When I first arrived from getting settled in and stuff I got to help with checking homework. I went around and if they completed their homework I gave them a ram buck. After that I walked around and help them complete their morning work. When they completed it Mrs. Joyner asked me if I would review it with them. I absolutely agreed, and I was more nervous than I thought. I read the sentences out loud to them and asked them to spell words as we went. I loved how respondent they all were, very much unlike high school students. After reviewing with them we had silent reading time and I read with one of the students. Next they had to take a quiz. I walked around and help the students read the questions, and when I was done with that it was time for me to leave. But since it was Halloween I was offered a cupcake on my way out!

  5. Well today was my first day of my placement and it was interesting to say the least. First off in the morning the seventh graders were having their Thursday health lesson that dealt with acne. But before that Coach Frye told me to hold the door for all the kids which was interesting because all of them stared at me like I was an alien. I then watched Coach Frye teach the lesson on acne and I actually learned a few things such as, if you scratch a pimple you could leave a scare and acne doesn’t last all that long. Then when I came back for my fourth block placement I held the door again for the sixth graders this time and one approached me and asked if I was a coach. Mrs. Greenway taught the lesson and it was about the benefits and the different types of exercising. After both the classes were over with I played basketball with the kids and all of them wanted me on their team because I am tall. All in all this was a very good first day and I am looking forward to the rest of the year. - Jacob

  6. Day one of placement was awesome! Because it is Halloween, each student was given goodie bags. Mrs. Catoe filled their bags with candy and small Halloween toys. They loved it! The candy and sugar was already kicking in, making the students very rambunctious. Mrs. Catoe and I had to tell some students to behave and to stop talking; I did not like that part of the day. While they snacked on their treats, Mrs. Catoe allowed them to watch “Spookley, the Square Pumpkin” and work on an activity booklet to go along with it. The story was about a pumpkin who was square and different. It taught them not to judge anything or anyone by its cover. We read Halloween stories, too! I got to help them with their fall spelling words later in the morning. My sign-up sheet was filled to the bottom with names of students who wanted to read with me! I got to hear five students read to me today. It shocks me how well they can read at the young age they are! Also, it makes me feel great to know that the students are so eager to read and learn with me.

  7. On my first day in my Kindergarten classroom I watched the children work for a little bit. Mrs. Gandy did the normal everyday things at first. She went over the date, first on a calendar, then she wrote the date like “10-31-13,” finally she counted the number of days we have been in school, 51. She had all the kids count all the way up to 51 in a normal voice, whispering, and yelling. When they were finished, Mrs. Gandy turned on the music and all the Kindergarteners went to the matt and started dancing. I made my way over and sat down in a chair waiting for the dancing to finish and a girl walked up to me. She finally grabbed my hand and started swinging it and “dancing” with me. Shortly after three other little girls came over and did the same. It was so cute. When the song went off, Mrs. Gandy read “Ten Little Mummies.” It was about ten mummies that left the tomb but started disappearing one by one until there was only one left. When the one went back to the tomb all the other mummies were there. After she read the story all the kids went to circle time where they each go to a group and learn something from Mrs. Gandy, Mrs. Berrett, and Mrs. Stephens. I usually watch the group that is by themself to make sure they are on task. Later Mrs. Gandy come up to me and asked if I would take over her group so she could go to an IEP meeting. I had to get the kids to look at a small book and use the pictures to figure out what the page said. They were well behaved and I feel like they learned something. My first day was great!

  8. Today was my first day of my placement. Originally, I was supposed to be with seventh grade PE at the middle school, but due to scheduling problems, I’m now at the high school helping with ninth grade PE 1 class with Mrs. Holley. At first I didn’t know what to think about switching from being with seventh graders to ninth graders, but I believe that it might be a little easier since they are closer to my age and I can easier relate to them. When I first got to class, the students were reading for SSR. After that, I took attendance for the class. One thing I did like about switching classes was that I already knew some of the students’ names and faces instead of being complete strangers to the class at the middle school. Mrs. Holley instructed the class to dress out and walk laps around the gym. After about five minutes of walking, she then escorted them outside to do stadium steps and one lap around the track. When they came back in they were allowed to play basketball or volleyball for the rest of class.

  9. I had an awesome first official day with my placement! My students took a test on Romeo and Juliet, today, so I got to grade quizzes for Mrs. Kahler. After the students were finished with their test, they began work on their sonnets. The sonnets must be written in iambic pentameter and they're very difficult for the students to write. I enjoyed helping them come up with ways to improve their writing! The students in my class are super sweet and very eager to ask questions. They all come in every morning, excited to learn. I'm so thankful that I get to be a part of their education experience and I know that we're going to have a great year!

  10. Today during Mrs. Mason’s class I helped the kids take any AR tests they had to take. After all the kids had taken their AR tests we went back to class where the kids were getting their work back that they had done during the week. Mrs. Mason asked me to help Daisy take her Vocab Test and Social Studies test that she had missed when she was out on the day it was given. After we had finished up with that Mrs. Mason sat the kids down in front of the projector and went over their second paragraph of their final drafts. - Christian

  11. Today was the first official day in my placement. When I arrived there, my class were waiting to be called for the awards program. The awards program lasted for 30 minutes. By the time we got back to our class, I only had 15 minutes left, before I had to leave. We took the class to the restroom and then read to them. I had to leave in the middle of the reading time. I’m so excited to have these kids for my placement. They’re all so sweet and loving! I cannot wait to see what these 6 weeks has in store for me!

  12. I received the joy of celebrating Halloween at my placement. If it wouldn’t have been for my placement, I wouldn’t have did anything interesting for Halloween. The middle school, sixth grade hall especially is famous for the science departments’ spooky dry ice session. Even though my placement isn’t in science I was still able to help out with the science lab. The students did several experiments with dry ice, such as putting it in water to make smoke. The students loved it! As far as my teacher we did fun M&M math. The students began with estimating how many M&M’s were in one snack size bag. After estimating they would open the bag, and see how close they were to their estimate. Moving onward, they then made a frequency table, showing how many M&M’s they had for each color. The amount of class room time was very short, and it seemed to go by faster than normal. One thing I noticed about my students, is their ability to follow routine. Typically when they come in they know what they have to do, and they know they better begin working on it. That’s one pro I really like about the students I’m with. I enjoyed the day with the students, and I’m positive they did the same. - Ben

  13. Today was our first official day in our placement! It was awesome! The previous week, we went to the classroom to observe. I got the chance to help edit some of their scary stories the students were working on. Today I was able to see the final product. The students read them aloud. For extra credit some of them put them in to PowerPoint and put scary music and pictures with them. It was awesome getting to see their finial work knowing how hard they worked on them. Mrs. Peake is so excited for them and she is so supportive of their work. If I become a teacher, I hope I have the same kind of enthusiasm and love she does for her job.
